What is living on Staten Island like?

Does anyone have firsthand experience living on the island in the past 10-15 years? Thanks!

It’s hard to imagine it being enjoyable for someone who didn’t grow up there.

Oh, I’m not looking to move there. It’s for a book I’m writing. I have a pretty good idea/visualization, but any additional info I could get would be helpful!

It is more conservative than most of New York City. There are a lot of cops and firefighters who live on the island. Most republican area by far

Fresh Kills Landfill. Look it up. The smell is permanently lodged in my nose.

Its working class, people still have strong accents. You should watch movies set there until you can get up there yourself but I strongly advise against writing anything set there until you've visited. Unless you're happy with no one ever publishing your work.

Most women want to be at home with their children after school. I doubt daycare is much of a thing for babies.

This. It's also super suburban. There's no way to get around without a car.

It’s like a suburb that happens to be inside New York City.

I have family in Staten Island and their teens take public transportation into NYC for sports practice and games.

Very blue collar. Lots of Italians. Good Italian-American food.

I would never want to live there but I have family who do.
