Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS)
|
We just moved to N. VA last July. My daughtor is 3rd grader from last Sep. We dont even know there is GT program in Fairfax county until she attended a CogAT test last Oct. Last weeken we got the results, but we are still confused what to do next. Her National Age Scores are: Verbal 132 (98%), Quan 125 (94%), and nonverbal 150 (99%), composite 148 (99%). Is she qualified to attend the GT school? We asked her teacher, and she just asked us to submit a referal form. My question is: she is not in the pool just due to the test results or something else? What do we need to prepare for the referal letter? Deadline is Feb 5th, any advice is helpful. Thanks.
A very confusing dad |
| She should be in the pool based on those scores. I would call the AAC coordinator at the school and get advice directly from her (could be a him, but probably a her). |

So your DD is a third grader this year? And she is new to FCPS this year?
The process is more automatic for second graders but less so for older grades, especially if your base school does not have a dedicated GT program. I agree that you should call or e-mail the GT/AAP coordinator for your school. They can help you with the process. But those are good scores and your DD would likely benefit from being in the GT program. |
If I understand you correctly, your daughter is currently in 3rd grade. The screening pool that people are referring to is for second grade only. You have to complete the referral form. The following web page has a link to the form as well as instructions on other materials you can submit. http://www.fcps.edu/DIS/gt/identificationrol2.html As others suggested, you should talk to the AAP coordinator at your daughter's school as well for guidance. |
