help my mousy hair!! color recs?

I have the "was blond as a kid am now mousy" hair color. I've had highlights off and on in the past but I can't justify the expense at the moment and often dislike the anchor woman look that I come home with. What else can I do in terms of color? The mousiness is depressing me and I would love to jazz things up a bit. I am sort of pale (bluish undertones rather than yellow) with brown eyes if that helps.

OP, you really need to go into a salon and have a professional look at you and show you some hair swatches. Make sure you go to a salon where they understand you can't come in every 5 - 6 weeks so they can give you the formula or box color suggestions so you can keep it up at home.

I am in the same situation. Blond as a child, now brown hair. I always feel my hairs needs brightening in the winter. Go with very subtle high light and low lights. It will brighten your hair and you can get away with going 2 to 3 times a years to get it done.

On a whim, I bought this yesterday - L'Oréal Couleur Experte Hair Color - Dark Ash Blonde. Comes with highlighting kit. Anyone try this?

Do you have a friend who could help you with the hard to reach places? I'd say it's almost impossible to do your own hair with highlights. I know my stylist has a fellow stylist do her hair, so that tells you something.

I also think you should go to a professional for a consultation and ask for something that will grow out easily and won't require you to come in every 4-6 weeks for roots. With mousy brown, be careful with at home kits because brown hair doesn't go straight to blonde - it passes through a nasty brassy coppery orange color first. If you don't pick the right color shade, you could end up with that (I did, and had to go in for correction).

Good luck!
