What is going on at Lowell School?

Anonymous
It seems that the administration at Lowell is a revolving door. Just found out today that after 6 months the Asst. Head of school is now leaving. Every month it seems that we receive an email explaining why someone left. Does anybody know what is going on?

is it the head of the lower school that's leaving? we're in the application process now and don't see a listing on the site for an assistant head of school.

Who else has left in the past year? We're interested.

Revolving door? Spoken like an independent school newbie. The previous head of school was there 20 years. The previous assistant head left to become head of another school, which is what happens when you have excellent administrators. There are many, many faculty with over 15 years tenure. The new head has brought in top notch science and math teachers. Its to her credit taht the school recognized that a new hire wasn't the right fit and took decisive action to fix it. Bravo!

You could have responded nicely with the newbie dig, 00:08. Classy.

The previous Assistant Head DID NOT take a position as Head at another school. He left do to a strained relationship with the new Head. It is true that the new Head is focusing on math/science and adding a middle school to Lowell. However, what you will not learn from the administration is how unhappy many of the faculty and staff are there. The new Head has made little attempt to get to know the community she has entered, to TRULY learn and invest in the diversity of the school, to listen to the voices of the staff and to be HONEST with them as well. I am a former employee of the school and it was a difficult decision for me to make to leave the school. I truly enjoyed working with my colleagues and I had great relationships with families whom I had taught many siblings of previous students. Even I was amazed how the new Head could change the culture of a "community-based" school in such a short time into a place where community is undervalued. Parents can not give you this perspective. I am not saying to anyone to not apply or send there child to Lowell. Just look beyond what may be told to you on the surface. Lowell still has some very good teachers there and some not so good teachers like any independent school. There are still a few teachers (not many) who have been there a long time. They are in the Pre-Primary division of the school. If you really want to get a sense of the school (past, present, and where it is going) don't leave Lowell without talking to a seasoned Pre-Primary teacher. You will not get what you need to know from the PP Director.

10:02, thanks for admitting you are a BITTER FORMER EMPLOYEE so we can judge your comments accordingly. The new head has been a terrific addition to the school and has made the changes that were needed. For example, she required all pre-primary teachers to have complete accreditations. Good for the school, bad for some former employees.

10:02 sounds like a wistful rather than bitter former employee and 11:14 sounds like a real asshole.

I hope 11:14 and 00:08 are the same poster because otherwise both defenders of the administration are jerks. Can please we hear that position expressed in a candid but non-abusive way?

Current parent - appreciate the insights of the honest former employee - as it is virutally impossible to get unfiltered information in any forum that is not anonymous. Current head is doing a wonderful job with academics (especially math and science), the middle school expansion is exciting (although I'm not sure about the timing) and the children are thriving both academically and socially. Many of the new teachers are very impressive and have come from schools like Norwood and GDS. However, many parents are concerned about the high attrition rate over the past year or two. If the new primary director was not a good fit, then yes it's a good thing to course correct sooner rather than later. But it is reasonable to hope and expect that the school will start focusing seriously on teacher retention - our children deserve this much.

Another overly sensitive sissy, if not the same one, who does not appreciate an honest disclosure that accompanies a post.

Not the same one. I'm one, not the other. The namecalling is not constructive.

Thanks 13:35!

I'm the second poster on this thread and with all this back-and-forth about who is bitter and who isn't, I still don't know exactly who it is that's leaving and when. Can someone with insight into the current situation tell me whether it's the head of the lower school that's going and if so, when and if known, why?

Thank you.

If you look on the website under employment it describes the position that they're recruiting for.
