Mad Science Camp

I'm looking for feedback on Mad Science camps (or if your child is enrolled in a mad science afterschool program, would love your insight on it). This would be for a rising 1st grader. Thanks!

Our son did a week of MS camp when he was a rising kindergartner. I thought it was fine but not great. He enjoyed the activities for the most part, but the counselors (college students) were so-so, and there was a chaotic feel to it to boot. I'm not sorry he did it for a week, but I'm not rushing to sign up again or recommend it either.

My kids enjoyed the afterschool version...and learned a few things too. Haven't done the camps. My son did do the City of Rockville BETR Science Camp which he really liked.

Headfirst Camps has partnered with Mad Science and is offering Science camp at St Albans in DC, St Luke in McLean, VA and Mater Dei in Bethesda, MD this summer (their website is www.headfirstcamps.com ). My 6 year old did the rocket camp last summer and loved it! Headfirst has excellent counselors (a lot of teachers and professional coaches) and I didn't feel the science counselors were college students.

We just signed up for all three Headfirst/Mad Science Camps (Robots, Rockets and this year they added a CSI camp) for this summer because they are offering a Early Bird Discount.

Good luck to you!

We did the Mad science at St Albans last year, fairly well organized, but more for kids under 9, I'd say...

My two sons did two different mad science camps one summer (they were 6 and 8). The first one they enjoyed, the second they thought so-so. I think in the second one the counselor was not terribly engaged with the kids. Because of the inconsistency, I would not do it again. Too bad, they both love science.
