Talk me off the ledge: COVID and Stuffed Animal

Anonymous
Ok talk me off the ledge here....our neighborhood had planned an Easter Egg hunt for kids in the neighborhood. They obviously cancelled this weeks ago but had already ordered materials (plastic eggs, a sand bucket, some bubbles and two little bunnies) so they made up baskets for the kids and I picked ours up today. When I got home I washed my hands, sanitized all the plastic eggs and bubbles inside and set the two small stuffed bunnies to the side to be washed. DD, who is almost 3, saw them after her nap and grabbed them before I was able to wash them. Husband just told me she took them to bed. Should I go take them from her bed now that she's asleep and wash them? Or am I overthinking this?

There can't be much risk here, right? Unless the person who packed the bag has COVID, coughed on their hands while packing the bag, and it was all within the last 48 hours?

Not much risk at all, probably more like 6 hours rather than 48 hours. The virus lives longer on hard surfaces, something cloth like like a stuffie it won't last long at all.

This is basically the 2020 version of the velveteen rabbit.

Assuming the stuffie came alive. If it did, then OP completely buried the lede.

Not much risk at all.

You need to have a glass of wine and calm down. The large large majority of people don’t have it. It is extremely unlikely that not only did the family have it but also extremely unlikely that the germs would have lasted and also extremely unlikely that if they did your daughter would have more than an extremely low symptom case. Give your anxiety a rest

Chill. You are more likely to die in a car wreck or choking on a pretzel.

How in the world does that begin to compare?! And are you saying that since other things can kill you, you shouldn’t take any precautions?

I hear your parroted post all the time from my Fox-watching in-laws. It’s so ridiculous.

That's simply not true.

Not pp but it is absolutely true.

It’s ok to wash them for peace of mind. Even if she slept with them last night. Take care of yourself however that looks like with this.

+1. It’s like saying since heart disease will more likely kill you than cancer, you should start smoking.

Wrong. Absolutely NOT true. Show your math:

USA road crashes kill 38k people per year which is 3,166/month
USA Coronavirus deaths as of April 10 are 19k

USA First Coronavirus death February 29 (one month and ten days ago)

So.... in 42 days 19,000 people have died from coronavirus but only approximately 4,373 people have died in a car crash

While I do think OP is probably fine with the stuffed animal, this sentiment isn't true. You should assume everyone you come in contact with at this point is infected. This virus is widespread and there is no place in the DMV that hasn't been touched by it. Also, her daughter's symptoms are not the point here - the point is preventing the spread.

OP, wash it, but don't worry. You can't change anything at this point anyway.
