Wedding Cakes

My sister is trying to find a place/person to do her wedding cake at @$3/slice. Any reccommendations??? The wedding is in Fredericksburg.

It may be hard to find a "real" bakery for under $3/slice, but I think it would be doable to find at-home bakers that would do it for that price. But maybe the market's different in Fredericksburg.

Another option -- per Bridal Bargins (the same folks who wrote Baby Bargins!) is to find a bakery that will do a "fake" wedding cake -- decorated styrform with one "real" layer for the cake cutting. Then, have a sheet cake prepared (MUCH cheeper!) that the guest will be served from (usually, after the cake cutting the wedding cake is wheeled into the back for cutting... the guests will never be the wiser!)

Regarding the "fake cake" with sheet cakes suggestion. Don't be surprised if a bakery still charges you the equivalent per slice price for the dummy cake, as it takes just as much time to decorate styrofoam as it does cake. If she's expecting a ton of guests, she could go with a small tiered cake for about 50-75 (of actual cake) with sheet cakes in the back as a cost-savings technique...

Regarding "in home" options. Make sure the reception site does not have any requirements about any outside food (including the cake) being only from a licensed facility. Not sure how the laws work in VA, but in MD, "in home" bakeries are not licensed...

Whatever you end up doing for the cake, make sure it tastes good... because if it doesn't, it doesn't matter how much or how little you spend, you will have WASTED that money.

She should call around to bakeries that are IN the Fredericksburg area... the prices there may be less expensive than the DC area, and delivery costs will be less.

You can get all white ice cream cakes made up in three ascending size rounds and go to Michales or a cake shop for a cake display which shows off seperate tiers individually with out tiering them one on top of the other. Go to www.stanthonysbridal.com for details on doing one yourself.

I agree with the above suggestion, but would stay away from ice cream cakes because you can't have them sitting out like you would at a wedding. Individual cakes take far less work to decorate and can be made fresh....wedding cakes often taste like crap because they take so long to decorate and aren't fresh. Just go to a bakery and get a bunch of cakes in different sizes of whatever kinds you'd like and then decorate with fresh flowers instead of those made out of icing or fondant. The florist will decorate it for a small charge if you have one of those. The cake stands aren't that expensive. You could also check Costco.....they do make wedding cakes.

Have you looked at grocery stores? Many do wedding cakes, although you have to assemble it yourself (we had an out of state baker come to our wedding, so she simply assembled it once it was picked up from the Giant).

I have no idea about the price, but there was a young woman (former co-worker) on a VERY limited budget for her wedding near Fburg. She bought her wedding cake from Ukrops and it was delicious and lovely as well.
