Used to eating fresh caught (literally) fish. Wondering if I should have it shipped from home? Or is there a fail proof fish resource here? Any place that might be properly regulated? I've heard so many horror stories. Many thanks! |
I don't go often, but find Whole Foods provides the best around here.
I recommend having it shipped. I had spotty good luck at the Tenleytown Whole Foods but got horrible fish at the 14th and P location, so it's hard to rely on WF and there are really no other good options. I'm from NE and feel like I have been on a 10 year fish hiatus, no fun.
I'm totally blanking on the name, but there's a place on South Glebe around the intersection of 395 that is supposed to be great. If I remember the name I'll post it.
I lived in New Hampshire and don't remember much in the way of fresh seafood. Here in DC we've had good luck at Wagshals.
Broad Branch market has much fresher (IMO) seafood than Whole Foods. I have been pretty grossed out at the smell near the fish counter at Tenley WF before. Broad Branch has a smaller selection but a fast turnover- the woman there is a stickler for freshness. Ive had great luck.
For the 395 and Glebe person- it's McSlavin and Sons I believe.
That's Slavins. Also, Cannon's in Georgetown is OK and there is a fish market behind the Arrowine on Lee Highway in Cherrydale. I think all of them have decent fish. Of course it always helps to go to a fish market with an open mind and ask the fishmonger what is looking good that day rather than have a set fish in mind. |
I'm a transplanted new englander as well. I'll buy fish at the Fishery on Connecticut avenue (at Livingston) and the fish stand at Eastern Market. Others really enjoy fish from the SW Waterfront, but I haven't bought there myself and don't know where to steer you.
Black Salt has a fish market.
Camerons Seafood Markets. There are several locations: Bethesda, Silver Spring, etc.
Buy fresh fish at Cannons on 31st ST (just below M) in Georgetown. This is where most of the top DC restaurants get their fish. Cook it at home.
Second the recommendation for BlackSalt--the fish is really fresh. Seafood at WF is mediocre at best.
Most of Whole Foods fish is not fresh caught, but pre-frozen. ANd while we're at it I'll 3rd BlackSalt. Also, the Organic Butcher in McLean sells fish.

I can't believe nobody has mentioned the Maine Avenue fish market, down on the Potomac waterfront. It's a big open-air fish market with many different vendors. I've always been very happy with the quality and I am definitely picky about fish. Plus it's kind of fun to go down there and check it out.
If you are in VA, I second the recommendation for Slavin & Sons off of 395. |
