I don't know. Ask on the STA sports thread. Someone should know for that. Crew is very very completive at STA, as they come in first place often every year so they may cut for that but as I said ask and someone will know. You can always ask admissions. They are very approachable. Good luck.

Yes, my son says all three make cuts. He is in upper school.

With sports such as baseball, golf and crew, it is the nature of the sport more than the competitiveness of the program that may or may not create cuts.

For example, with crew - there is one freshman boat which requires 8 rowers, a cox and maybe a few alternates in case of injury so if more than 12 boys want to row, yes there will be cuts because it is not fun or productive for a boy to just stand around while others are racing. It is better for that kid to find a different sport where he can participate more. Similarly with baseball, there are only so many boys that can warm a bench so if too many want to play there may be cuts.

Alternatively, lacrosse could sub in players during a game and has a JV and Varsity team so absorbs a lot of bodies so no cuts necessary. Similarly for track and field. Any number of kids can run.

No cuts for swimming. Good program too.

So, I'm curious how a young boy would prepare to be competitive on the freshman rowing team?

Weight room and overall fitness.

To prepare for freshman crew tryouts your son should spend some time on an erg machine because cuts are usually made based on erg times. The boys do a good job self selecting and only a dozen or so will try out freshman year and all those trying out tend to be very serious about pursuing it. Everyone knows that rowing can be tough - a real grind - so the boys who try out usually go into it eyes wide open. The boys who make the team are overall good athletes and being tall (at least 6'0") is helpful, unless your son is interested in being a cox. Most will have also participated in the summer rowing camps offered at STA. The camp gives them a really good insight into the program and the opportunity to get to know the coaches. It seems to be a great program and the boys seem to like Coach Haley and the freshman coach.

This thread reminds me of my neighbor’s kid. Nice student, 6'11", went to Yale to study economics. At the the Freshman orientation a guy in a baseball cap and sweatpants came up to him and asked:

"Do you row crew?"
"Never have" he replied.
"You will now. First practice is next week."

The guy then got up and made a quick speech introducing himself as the rowing coach. "Tryouts are next week. Not all of you will make it." He then turned to the side and said quietly to my friend “of course, that doesn't apply to you".

Why did STA get rid of AP classes?

I love that this was aired-shaming is sometimes the only thing that corrects rude people. I also think the school should make a call to let the parents know that they know about this party. Yes it is off campus but same
People would not want School displeased lest “billy” can’t get a leg up to Harvard

My son is at overnight football camp with STA. Is it common for schools private or public to shop kids away for football preseason training?

Teach your child about drugs and drinking prior to high school.

Invite only parties still exist at the high school level and can be cruel and elitist.
