I don't understand how why Catherine is messing around with amateur photo shop on a photo for their official accounts. It sounds sort of plausible (lots of people take photos of their families and edit them themselves, often poorly, before posting on social media). But given the way photos of the family are typically handled, it is strange. The photos were distributed to news agencies through KP's press office. Presumably Catherine didn't even post the photo to Instagram herself-- someone from her or William's team did. So the explain that Catherine got a little overzealous editing the photo and then posted it without thinking of the implications is odd.

But also, even if you take them at their word, the editing itself is odd. Why would there be so much editing around her hands and neck but not her face? What was Catherine trying to "fix" with the editing? If we are to believe she edited it herself, that would rule out the idea that it is multiple photos spliced together to get a good photo of all (way too complicated for a layperson and would be more obvious). If they were just trying to make her look better or conceal signs of illness, the location of the edits are odd.

I don't know. This prompts more questions than it answers.

Oh yes, I caught that too. And then of course the BBC headline reiterates that implication, so now it is "the truth" in the media narrative but the palace can still say "oh Catherine didn't say she edited this image, just that she sometimes edits images and apologized for confusion over this one." It's sleight of hand that could really backfire here.

She has edited pictures before. And she has taken what become official photos before, too. She's been a hobby photographer for years, not sure why you think she wouldn't be familiar with using editing tools. This wasn't a great editing job - but there are plenty of professional or official photos that are badly edited.

The part I don't understand is the reaction from AP, Getty, etc. That's the strange part.

Here’s my theory- Kate was either having an affair or confiding in the guy who ended up dead about the state of her marriage. This came to a head after Christmas and William’s temper got the best of him. She’s been incapacitated (or worse) since. Kids are being told the same lies the world is being told while they figure out how to handle it. Maybe she’s in a coma and they don’t want to say anything until they know whether she’s going to recover. Or maybe it’s worse. They’re assuming interest is going to die down and, if she doesn’t make it or didn’t make it, they can blame recovery from whatever surgery as the cause of death. Her parents are radio silence because they’re waiting for a payout for their troubles.

I doubt it’s eating disorder related because that would be such a great cause for people to get behind and sympathize with.

At this point the world is going to need some sort of actual proof of life or this situation is going to continue spiraling. I think it could be the downfall of the BRF.

She was like this less than 5 years ago when Louis was born too. Also, in this case, it's not just a change in behavior from middle aged mom, but a major change in publicity protocol from a government entity. It is odd that when Louis was born, the palace took great pains to ensure that Louis, William, and Catherine were photographed by reporters within hours of the birth, and quickly disclosed his birth certificate, but regarding this most recent issue, they have carefully avoided any photos of Catherine or the kids for two months, and the ONE photo revealed by the palace, allegedly taken last week, was heavily and badly edited to the point it had to be pulled by news agencies.

It's not Catherine's changing behavior that is raising eyebrows -- it's the palace's sudden shift.

Has she edited photos before? I've never heard any issues with the photos she has taken before. There was some weird stuff going on with their holiday photo last year, but that was taken by a photographer-- is the implications that she edited it?

And this doesn't explain why these edits focused on strange things. Why would she take pains to edit her hand on Charlotte's waist, but not correct the lighting on her face, which is a bit dimmer than that on the kids?
