We just bought a set of Calphalon pots from BB&B, but haven't unboxed them yet. Overall, the pots are very well reviewed, but I have seen a number of reviews that mention that the lid handles get hot. (The lids are glass with stainless steel rims and stainless steel handles.) Does anybody have any insights into how hot the lid handles get during stovetop use? Is this something unique to Calphalon pots or a general problem with glass lids with metal handles? I can't see myself remembering to use a potholder to lift the lid all the time . . . Thanks! |
| It's a general problem. They are nice pots. You will get used to it once you burn your fingers a few times! |
| Yes, it's a universal problem. You can't see yourself remembering to use a potholder NOW, but as PP said, after you burn your fingers several times, it will become a habit! |
| Yeah. I use a potholder to lift lids. Ours (pothoders) are silicon so there's no fabric to worry about keeping clean. It doesn't seem like such a big deal to me. |

So is it the glass that's the issue? Among our current mix of old pot sets I have some stainless steel (thinner) Cuisinart pots with stainless steel lids and I do not have to use a potholder. Another question--will these lids break if you drop them or does the tempered glass prevent that? TIA! |
| agree with pp's. are your old pots metal handles on the lids or plasticky covered handles on the lids? usually the plasticky ones don't need pot holders but the metal ones do. |
They won't break if you drop them. My toddler plays with and drops them all of the time. |

OP here: Thanks for the info on lid dropping--I'm glad your toddler has "tested" them for me.
As far as the lids I mentioned, they are s. steel lids with s. steel handles--the only difference would be the glass versus metal lids. I haven't noticed the metal lid metal handles getting hot. |
| All my lids have handles that get hot. I use a flat wooden spoon to lift them! It's much less cumbersome than a potholder. |
