Too crowded. DMV governors and mayors: please dedicate streets to walkers and bikers

Anonymous
When everyone’s working from home, there are too many people on city sidewalks to achieve proper 6 foot spacing.

We need to dedicate streets to walkers and bikers, and close them to cars. Traffic is way down already.

Bowser and the DC council could do this right now.

Dedicate some streets to walkers, runners, and bikers.
Promote social distancing.

Hey, you chose to live in a high density area and that's what high density means. Some people can only get to the grocery with their car and need to get to doctor's appointments and so forth. Why should we close streets to those critical trips but allow random people to joywalk in the streets? Bizarre idea.

Look, the chances of you getting Covid 19 from the outside air for someone 3 feet for a split second is very slim. People who are really sick are not going outside. I know there are some cases where people could be asymptomatic, but you also have to be practical and reasonable OP. If you anxiety is that bad, then you need to travel somewhere remote or stay home.

The 6' thing is about extended time, not a fraction of a second outside.

Just stay home. Namaste.

How tf do you expect people to get to the grocery store, pharmacy, or doctor’s office?

But aren't we safer in an enclosed car driving than walking or biking? I'm not sure how this would help to flatten the curve. In fact it might encourage more people to be out and about.

I’d say close rock creek to cars during the duration of this. Same with Sligo creek parkway. For both, leave some openings as needed for people who live off those and have no other way to drive out. Right now, there is less than 90% of the usual Car traffic but several times more walkers, joggers, bikers than usual because everyone’s cooped up at home. It’s dangerous and crazy to not open up some roads to give people more space to be outside safely.

Yes, exactly.

And close SOME other streets in downtown DC.

How about we get rid of the bike lanes? Since no one hardly even uses them. Talk about wasted space.

And how do you want my essential worker husband to get himself and his equipment to the hospitals/labs to work?

Welcome to the wonderful world of high density living! It’s quite the utopia.

How about we leave the streets to the medical personnel, emergency vehicles, and essential personnel (and kids learning to drive).

You have a sidewalk in your neighborhood? Must be one of those rich neighborhoods.

Are you sure learning to drive is essential?
