Skateboard?

Anonymous
My 6 year old desperately wants a skateboard like the big kids in the neighborhood. Is this a horrible idea? Some kids also have the Razor RipStik, are they any safer?

I have a six year old. He isn't ready. I know this because he has tried to play with his older brother's skateboard. The skills just aren't there with a six year old. Save your money.

Wait til it’s safer to get help at er. Jic.

Wait until this is all over. You cant risk a broken bone. Maybe a balance board would help?

Scooter. It's like a skateboard with a handle.

It depends on the kid. I see some 6-year-old whizzing around at the skatepark, but those are kids who started really young. My 9-year-old is not as steady as these young kids and it has been frustrating for him, but on a scooter he's awesome. Does your kid have a scooter? If not, I'd start there. Don't get a foldable one though - those are hella dangerous and not allowed at skateparks or if jumping curbs (broken arms because they can fold unpredictably on impact).

No. You don’t want to risk any broken bones at this point.

We bought my 7 year old a skateboard, and I'm actually pretty surprised at how good she's become in just a short time. She had a toy one for a few years that she occasionally would play on in the house, but not much beyond that. She also rides her scooter and bike a lot, so she has those skills which may have helped.

FWIW, I did some research, and this skateboard came up a lot as a good one for kids. And it's also not super expensive.

Not a horrible idea at all! Chances of a broken bone are small and the chance of actually needing an ER visit are almost negligible. (Urgent care can deal with most broken bones). Just make sure you get a good helmet and it’s fitted properly.

Thanks! The Easter Bunny may bring him this one. DS also has a toy/small one and he plays with it pretty nonstop and he's surprisingly good with it. He's pretty athletic so I feel like this isn't too out of realm for him at this point.

Just wait. My nephew broke his arm last week and was in the ER with a face mask. Just not worth the risk, not only to your kid, but to society (draining resources that are so needed now).
