Businesses not complying with the shutdown

Anyone know of any business in the DMV area that are staying open when they are considered non-essential. I’m frustrated because I know a few and I’m tempted to call them out. For instance. Persona trainers seeing clients at “closed” gyms (guess they have an “arrangement” with the owner, and a few other shops that are non essential.

People are not banned from working privately during this time. Physical locations for non-essential businesses are supposed to be closed to the public, but these people don’t get paid if they don’t work. I would never report my massage therapist, for example, knowing that she is offering to do house calls. It is literally her livelihood.

I don't see how use of a closed gym by a trainer and a client is an issue. Maybe the client doesn't have space at his/her place to work out?

Right, the whole issue is supposed to be the ability to self-distance, which doesn’t seem to an issue in a closed gym. It would be cruel to try to do anything knowing these people are relying on clients to make their bills.

If the gym isn’t being sanitized between visits, it could become a way of transmitting COVID 19. My hair stylist is offering one patron in the salon at a time appointment slots and promises she will sanitize between clients, but she really needs to stop.

Exactly. Gym trainers and salon workers are going to have no income now. If there is a safe way for them to get some income, how does this impact you? You don't need to go to the gym or salon.

I remain convinced that the virus is primarily transmitted from person to person, and not via other potential exposure routes (packaging, mail, etc.). Yes, the virus can LIVE on surfaces, but is the viral load enough to actually infect someone? That said, I will be watching to see what happens in a few weeks. If folks continue to get it and have truly been socially isolated for more than 2 weeks, then I will revisit my thinking. However, most places that implemented strict shelter-in-places saw cases start dropping after 2-3 weeks.

They are allowed to be open but I'm horrified at the crowds in Home Depot and Walmart. No attempt at social distancing for those businesses. Entire families with children coming in to the store. I understand contractors needing supplies, or some people needed something important ... but not crowds of people.

Trader Joes is doing an excellent job with social distancing, not allowing too many people in to their store.

If you live in Virginia, non-essential businesses are still allowed to be open. We have been to many in recent days.

If she is in Virginia, she could be fined. And, Northam has said they are closed for another month.

My husband wants to go to Home Depot. I allowed it twice and now I’ve put my foot down. Way too many people in there and no attempts at social distancing.

Home Depot is only allowing 100 people at a time in their stores. Morning see huge lines of contractors waiting to get their turn.
