Is Carderock ES REALLY that good?

Anonymous
...as it appears on 'paper'? What makes it so exceptional in MC?

I think so. My sister's kids went there and my sister raved about it.

It is one of the smallest elementaries in the county (if not the smallest; can't recall), which by itself is good - study after study shows that small = good for elementaries. (Try telling that to MCPS though, LOL.)

I wonder how long it'll stay small. The new building (that's still under construction) is BIG.

Would love to hear more feedback on this school.

I wonder, too. I think it's the only school in the Whitman cluster that is under-enrolled.

They could bring in kids from elsewhere. It has an educated demographic, that is why the scores are so good.

And it's homogeneous and it's affluent. Those characteristics help too.

white/asian +educated + affluent = academic success

Sad, but true

Plus, success begets success, thus, even if you are black/latino, have uneducated parents, and poor, if you are in a school where everyone else is white/educated/affluent, you will do better because of them.

My children attend Carderock. While I don't have anything else to compare it to, I will say that I have been very happy with the education my children are receiving. It feels like a "public-private school". There are some outstanding teachers and a new principal who seems to have set a really positive tone in the building. It will be interesting to see how/if these change when it moves back to the renovated building.

Can you tell us approximately how many African American and Latino children are in each of your children's classes? Or are the classes primarily (entirely?) white and Asian?

Maybe I'm missing something...but are all of you saying that if a school were 100% black or latino, with highly educated and affluent parents--there would be no '= academic success'? Hmmmm....

white/asian does not = academic success you know? there are many highly educated blacks and latinos (& a few affluent ones two ; )

Think our current president maybe?

And that's why D.C.-metro suburbs will never progress beyond 'old South' ideas. And why D.C. residents have little respect for those who live in the 'burbs and claim to live 'in D.C.'

What?!?! This comments are all ridiculous! As for the "old south", I live in Mont County and must say that NONE of the people who I associate with have an "old South" mentality. It's a liberal county.

PP's point certainly would have been better stated differently, but it's the reality that in most of MC, if there is a large % of black/latino children in the school, it is also going to have a large % of subsidized meals (read: less affluent families). Also, mostly, if a school has a very large % of white/Asian kids in MC, then it's likely to have fewer poor families. This is simply a reality of the demographics in this area - NOT a blanket statement that black/Latino people are not smart and that there are no many affluent blacks and latinos.
