Sephora- what am I missing?

Anonymous
There are several people I know that love Sephora- I'm missing something b/c I find it overwhelming and the staff unhelpful. Can you clue me in...

I go for the selection... I have only asked for assistance once and it was bad advice!

They are probably makeup junkies who thrive in that atmosphere. Depends upon your level of comfort and knowledge. OP, what is it that you want to accomplish there?

I have gotten great advice (shu uemura eyelash curler) and horrible advice (lip plumper).

I like Sephora because I like looking at stuff that is organized and colorful. I also like hanging out at craft and beading stores. Is that some kind of fetish?

I do most of my Sephora shopping online - they have a great selection of products, pretty quick shipping, and it's usually pretty easy to find a code for some sort of deal (extra samples, free shipping, etc.).

OP here- My goal is just to update my look every now and then. I don't wear a lot of makeup (prefer the "less is more look") but would definitely like adivce on great products, etc.

Where else can I go?

OP, I would sign up for some of these great makeup websites that keep you updated on new products and how to use them.

When you go to Sephora, I would go first thing in the morning so you get the attention you need. Would also be clear about your goals to them so they understand your needs. Find a makeup artist who wears makeup that you like.

Or hire an independent artist who uses a number of makeup lines and can take you around to stores and show you what you should buy.

I definitely agree about going to Sephora in the morning, preferably on a weekday. I went into the one in Chevy Chase one morning after a doctor's appointment, and I was given tons of personal attention by an excellent staffperson who really knew her stuff. And it just felt so much less hectic at that time than it does during a normal weekend day.

I like Sephora because it is self serve and you can easily get what you want. You don't have to go counter to counter at the dept. store trying desperately to find someone who can help you.
