Special things for birthday during this time

Anonymous
Any suggestions for ways to make a kid’s birthday special during this time? Our state has just received the stay at home order. My soon to be 7 year old is feeling down about his birthday since he won’t be able to celebrate with friends or even grandparents.

We plan on decorating and I am making him a cake of choice and he’ll get presents. Any other suggestions for ways to make it special?

Just saw a video of a wedding that did a drive by reception, wearing gloves and handing out cookies to each car. How locked down are you? Could you get a few friends to decorate their cars or make posters and do some sort of happy birthday drive by?

Same poster, do you live in a busy area could you make a honk it’s my bday poster, go outside, play some music and wave it around? Usually what makes it special is acknowledgment!

Set up a Zoom surprise party. Set a time with grandparents, friends and family. Sit with your birthday boy on whatever device you decide to use. Everyone else is on a few minutes before and SURPRISE! Maybe a family member can have a cupcake with candle set up, everyone sings, birthday boy blows at screen and someone on other end blows it out. He'll love it and other kids will too. It's free and you can download app to any device.

Not a bad idea but my state just went to a don’t leave/drive unless you’re essential order this morning so I will have to see how long this lasts.

Thanks, I haven’t tried Zoom yet but I will look into it.

Can you ask your kid's friends' parents to send videos of their kids singing happy birthday to yours? We did that for a friend last week.

Thanks! I think a few parents I know would do this.

We attended a short Zoom birthday party yesterday. Fun but chaotic with everyone talking at the same time

Don't have people drive by. That defeats the purpose. Great people are getting creative but that's how this virus spreads. I don't get how people think this stuff is ok.

You have a make up day later on. Presents, cake, chat online with family.

Plan a Group FaceTime with his friends so they can all sing HBD to him. We are doing this for our daughter.
