Streets Near Arlandria to Avoid Buying a House On?

Anonymous
I've been reading various posts to learn about safety in Alexandria and it sounds like living Arlandria is not a safe area.

Some of the house listings that I'm interested in are in Beverly Hills and Del Ray and look to be about a mile away from that area on mapquest. Can anyone direct me to a map on a web site or just write here what streets it would be better to avoid?

Thank you.

What are you trying to avoid? Things like package theft, car theft, bicycle theft, etc... happens everywhere. Even far in the burbs.

I've lived in different parts of Alexandria City (Del Ray, Old Town) for a decade and violent crime is rare. I feel very safe.

Pentagon City in Arlington seems to have some recent issues with carjackings and the like. But that's a very recent thing.

What was it like living in old town? I’d love to live off of or on lee street/king street area.

I guess what I'm wondering is how safe it is for a woman coming home after dark like after 9, for instance in Del Ray Mt Vernon Ave, Potomac West Beverly Hills near or around Tennessee Ave. That's my main concern. Also, I understand there are gangs in Arlandria. In terms of stealing cars are they breaking into locked cars or unlocked cars and yes carjackings which I hadn't thought of. I moving from suburbia and haven't lived near or in a city for a very long time.

OP here. I'd love to know that, too. I'm so accustomed to a townhouse in a community rather than having the front door right on Royal or North Washington St.

I think your preconceived notions aren’t correct. But look at the data yourself. https://communitycrimemap.com/

Del Ray is pretty safe. It’s still relatively urban though. If you want a super suburban environment, move further out.

I’m glad to hear that, thanks. I read lot of forums and after a while you don’t know what’s what. Thanks for the link to the community crime map. I’m sure it will help.

There's almost zero personal crime like assaults and muggings. It happens but is not something that you need to take special precautions for. There are regular car break-ins, and people post video on nextdoor of people wandering the streets trying car handles at like 3 am. But if you are smart and lock your car and don't leave anything in it, you'll be fine.

Old Town is a totally different vibe. Personally I wouldn't love having no porch/stoop and would be worried about package theft in such a highly trafficked area.

I loved living in Old Town. I would not recommend that close to King, but 4-8 streets away is great. I loved being able to walk to everything, close to the water/parks, etc. The tourists have gotten really awful lately, but they bring business.

Arlandria (Del Ray I guess)? is fine. It's a little more suburban, but still safe. The times I was out late were fine, and I never felt unsafe. Mugging is unlikely. Package theft and checking cars? That definitely happens no matter where you live these days.

I'd stay away from Pentagon City at night though these days.

I believe the carjackings were all at the mall, which is now closed due to the virus. Also, a suspect (from MD) was taken into custody. Outside of the mall, Pentagon City and surrounding area haven’t had a surge in crime.

People are right in that crime happens anywhere. That being said, if you like your current living setup, don't talk yourself into liking something else.

I'm like you, I like an HOA where my house doesn't open onto a street that is used by well anybody. I feel safer, and I realize that I may not be.

Remember, you have to literally live there. It's where you will wake up in the morning and where you will go to sleep at night. It's where you will go when the world has its way with you.
You want to look forward to coming home and enjoy being there.
There is nothing wrong with deciding that Arlandria isn't right for you.

I think you’ll probably be fine. It would be unlikely for anything besides package theft and carjacking to happen, however wouldn’t recommend doing it just for fun. Going more north, like between pentagon row and arlandria would probably be your best bet but housing is a bit more expensive there.

Arlandria is North of Glebe. Anything South is Del Ray or Beverley Hills. And Tennessee Ave is absolutely fine any hour of the day.
