Are our kids (rising college freshmen) going to college this late summer?

Anonymous
This is stressing me out.

My kid is supposed to go to new student orientation in early June and move into the dorms on August 15. Is this even going to happen?

Move-in - maybe.

Orientation - almost certainly not.

Don't try to look more than a week ahead. Just keep your family at home, make sure everyone else in your world is doing the same. Best way to do your part to help life get back to normal.

Will we ever see my current college kids possessions again? Colleges will not let us pick them up now. What travel restrictions will exist by the time they do??

I think they will start school - but everyone will be wary and it will be different until a vaccine is found.

My kid's school has organized what sounds like a good system. You make an appointment to pick up your stuff. The appointments are 4 hour slots. Only 50 kids (spread across dorms) are allowed on campus at a time to do this.

They have spread the move out over like ten days (to accomodate all of the appointments).

Seems well thought out to me.

I'm more worried about my HS senior's graduation being canceled. We've been told to prepare our kids for that reality. DC will be going to a UC in California and they are on the quarter system, so late September start. I think they'll be fine with start date.

Best wishes and good health to everyone. I saw this on social media yesterday about the class of 2020:

They came into this world in the days of 9/11 and they are graduating high school during a pandemic. They’ll be our strongest generation yet.

Congrats on that positive spin...it has merit.

That literally brings tears to my eyes. I was six months pregnant on 9/11; he was born in December.

Best wishes to all our seniors.

If I had a college senior I might talk about the possibility of doing a gap year. It's hard to know but there may be more disruptions in the fall.

Gap year doing what though? That's the question.

A gap from starting a full time job?

Maybe you meant high school senior?

Community college would be better than having online classes at a big university.

Are you the PP who asked? So this is for a high school senior? Attending a CC wouldn't be a gap year. That would probably involve withdrawing from the four year university and later applying as a transfer.
