i know we are all covered the next two weeks, but any thoughts on what happens after that? i am getting a bit afraid. The most recent MCEA email was a bit vague. As a teacher I want to be in the classroom. I don't mind supervising online learning, but I dont have updated training for it.
I know some in the public will just shrug at a teacher complaining, but most teachers I know live paycheck to paycheck. |
| Not sure, but I am right there with you. I also need the pay and cannot afford to be without pay. |
| I'd assume they would. Not doing so is going to make things worse, |
|
Having lived in the county for 25+ years, I am pretty sure all of MCPS will get paid on time.
My question is what kind of push back will there be from MCPS staff if it's decided that the school year should go through June and into July to cover everything? For many teachers I know, they make ends meet by earning extra $ over the summer. That might not be possible. |
| I am a supporting services staff member and we were told on Friday that this would be treated like an emergency weather closure for pay purposes...but I do wonder if that will be true if this needs to go on for a long time. Also wondering about summer and I agree with the PP who says many count on making extra money during the summer to help cover bills. I hope we will all be getting updates on what is being decided soon. |

I'm sure they will get paid.
I'm also pretty certain this will go on for 8 weeks. I assume the State will grant counties a waiver for the 180 day requirement. Larry Hogan is not playing around here. This is a real emergency. |
I'm wondering about that too. I want teachers to get paid. I also want school to make up the time, in the summer.. |
|
They already applied for the waiver for the 180 day requirement (which will likely be granted)
They are also likely not to make up those days (hello - see waiver applied for, above) No idea about payment if we end up closed for the long-haul for MCPS staff (teachers and secretaries and building service and paraeducators, etc), but I would say likely to get paid AND likely to not have to make up school days. Make-up days through the summer? You are dreaming... |
| Yes, they get paid and don't have to do any work. We were told not to contact teachers. |
This shutdown will likely last 8+ weeks. They won’t get waivers for that |
I am sure the union would complain, but talk about tone deaf. They will have gotten paid for many months of not working when many people won’t have been so lucky. And of course the kids won’t have been in school all this time. To demand extra pay and complain about the loss of side gigs would be hard to listen to. |
| They will get a waiver if they proved they did everything possible to meet the full educational requirements of the students. |
Why? Students are just going to miss 3 months of school, and shrug, ho hum, better luck next year? |
Um, because feds and states have declared emergencies? Because they will no way send kids to school in the summer, even if we end up closed for 8 weeks. Yes, it'll be to bad so sad. They will send work home (will have to come from curriculum office, teachers are not going to be asked to do this), and kids will either do it, or not. |
What a thing to say about kids' education. And you're a teacher? |
