What is your favorite "at home" haircoloring product?

I recently started coloring my hair at home with Loreal Natural Match (damn economy) and was happy with the way it came out the first two times. The third time I used it my ends came out a shade darker then the roots. I am so annoyed. I need to color my hair every 4-5 weeks for I need something fairly gentle but with consistent results. Suggestions, please?

Only put the color on your roots, because you're just adding more color on top of color when you put it all over. Let it sit on your roots for a while (you need to figure out the time yourself, read the directions carefully) anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes, I'd guess, before you pull it through the rest of the length of your hair. You shouldn't even do this pull through part everytime you color, only if you feel the ends need a little boost of color. I use Natural Instincts, which is a semi permanent color and it just washes out gradually so you don't really get obvious roots.

I've been using Frederick Fekkai - I was drawn to it because it comes with a bowl and brush - and I really like it. Color is great and does not fade too quickly. It's pricey - $30, but considerably less than salon prices. You can get it at Sephora.

I love Loreal Excellence Creme. It looks totally natural and leaves my hair shiny and healthy. I only color my whole head every other time.

I like Feria but I've used many different kinds and I can't tell you if it's always the brand of haircolor, or the application jobs that's causing the results. My hunch is that it's usually the application of the product rather than the product itself.
