Failed first Cycle

Anonymous
We got the testing back on our three embryos, they were all abnormal. They were also all girls. To say this is a shock is an understatement. I am 38, husband is 40, we have unexplained secondary infertility. Our stats went like this:

12 retrieved

10 fertilized

8 Day-3

7 Day-5

3 Biopsied and frozen

We are going to meet with our RE this Friday to discuss next steps. This was our first round after failed IUIs. I'm not even sure it is worth doing a second round, any experiences on a complete bust of a first cycle and better outcome for the second cycle? The prospect of putting out so much more money for another failure is almost unfathomable.

I’m so sorry. I would take the approach of minimizing later regret because there’s no way to guarantee any outcome. Let’s assume the second cycle doesn’t work either. In 5 years, will you regret having done it? Or will you be more likely to say, well we tried? At this point in life you probably know about where you fall on these things. Donor egg?

It can take 2-3 cycles. My first cycle yielded 1 day 5 embryo. Fresh transfer. BFN.

2 back to back cycles at a different clinic. 3 total PGS normal from those two cycles. FET. Baby boy sleeping on me after his 2 month shots.

This is good perspective and how I went into this cycle. I was optimistic but not naive, it's just crushing to get three embryos and have them all be abnormal. I am curious to hear my doctor's thoughts on this but suspect since it is one round, he may say it is luck of the draw given my age. I know we are definitely not going to pursue donor eggs. Thanks for responding!

Thank you! It truly takes one, congratulations on your success!

PP. it’s absolutely crushing. Good luck with whatever you decide! Take care of yourself in the meanwhile.

I'm sorry. Agree with pp about future regret and timing. I also am evidence that it takes one. I hated hearing that at the time. But I got 8 eggs, 5 to blast, 1 normal. He's teething right now.

Same poster: ask re about running an endometrial receptivity test as soon as you can. That way, you do not risk the wrong timing on the precious embryo I hope you get!

I definitely will!

I had 5 abnormals the first time and 3 normals in the next two cycles. My RE recommended taking ubiquinol for egg quality.

I have been on ubiquinol but hopefully with more time under my belt it’ll help, if we choose to move forward.
