dreading summer

Anonymous
Now that I am over 50 and finished with menopause, I am dreading summer because of wearing shorts! I am in great shape and work out and look good in clothes (meaning thin). But... now that I am of a certain age, my bare legs look gross. They now have cellulite (which I never had when I was younger) and getting that papery looking skin. At this point, I don't think there is anything I can do, just feel sad about my changing body!

Sometimes I feel this way too. I have gone DECADES without wearing a swimsuit in public. One day, I went to the beach in not-a-swimsuit, and watched someone tipping 300 lbs. in a bikini with a huge smile on her face enjoying the water and having a blast. And then I got over myself.

Do you want to be someone who dreads summer because she doesn’t like her legs?

There's always people who will look better than you, and always people who will look worse than you. I promise no one's looking at your legs at the beach, the pool, the lake, whatever - they're busy having their own fun!

I wear maxi dresses a lot in the summer. Covers the legs and I stay cool

Go spend some time at a ?body positive beach?, like Rio. The marketing folk would have you believe that it?s all 20-something hard body types in string bikinis. The reality is it?s a bunch of overweight every-something?s in tiny swimsuits having a great time.

I have had spider veins on my calves (which spread over time) since I was 25. I'm 47 and wear shorts and dgaf what my veiny legs look like to others. No one notices and, if they do, they don't care. Please wear what you want and enjoy your life.

Spray tan or self tanners really help.

Hardly anyone will be out this summer so wear what you want!

Oh, please.

My legs are horrible, too, OP. I wear my bathing suit (the most flattering one I could find) to swim and otherwise

Lotion your legs, if you're white then spray tan may help you feel a little less pasty/gross. Rock your summer self!

+1 or midi/long skirts. I haven't put on a pair of shorts in many moons. I know the girl power chicks will chime in and say do what you want, but ultimately if I know I look bad, I feel uncomfortable, so why force it? Sun skirts and dresses are a great alternative for summer, no cellulite exposed option.

There are plenty of worse things in life so get over it and suck it up and do whatever makes you happy.

have gone DECADES without wearing a swimsuit in public

Just adding ... there is no reason you have to wear a swim suit. A long T over yoga-type pants and you're good to go. You can swim. You have coverage.

Swimming in yoga pants ? I see 80-year old women in swimsuits. It would be stranger swimming in pants.

There are some women in swim burkas at our community pool—that’s an option.
