| I would appreciate any insight from current families. Our middle school daughter is shy, like music and sports, and enjoys math. Interested in hearing about social environment (especially for kids that do not live super close to school), college placements, etc. Thank you. |
Bullis has an excellent music program— they consistently do well at festival competitions and have a lot of offerings. There are shy kids that do well. Not every kid there is the outgoing sports star. |
St. Andrews. Bullis is not a place for quiet and shy kids. St. Andrews will be a much better fit. |
My son is a shy kid and LOVES Bullis. He is in band and they just performed at the Maryland Music festival where they received a superior rating! They are off to States next. Bullis has a wonderful music program. |
| Bullis would be a great fit for your daughter. The music program is excellent as is the math department, especially in the high school. Many, many quiet (and happy!) kids at Bullis. |
A lot of recent news coming out of Bullis. Read other threads on here to educate yourself. |
"On here?" What does that even mean? |
It means on the Private/Independent Schools board here on DCUM. Which is exceptionally biased against Bullis, it seems. |

We are making the same choice! My son is also shy and while he likes sports, doesn't live for them, so that's something I've been asking a lot about. Of the current families I've talked to, I will say that all the Bullis families have said that the school is just big enough to have room for both kinds of kids. One mom said her two sons are totally different, one super sporty, one quiet, and that they both love it there and have found their people. I've been really encouraged on that point from my conversations. |
| Bullies continues to have reputation issues. I?d be concerned about that. Also the kids are a lot socially faster. SAES is a very warm, academically strong atmosphere that doesn?t have a party reputation. |
These two schools are very different socially. Very different. |
How so? (Prospective parent here, it's an honest question.) |
| OP here = Also very interested in how they are different. Also, any input on if hard for kids socially if they do not live right near the school. Any major difference in college placement? Thank you. |
| I can speak only to geography at SAES middle school. Kids definitely are not all from Potomac. Its only hard if you are not willing to drive your kid to see friends. My MS students has friends from Silver Spring, Rockville, Kensington, Germantown, and northwest D.C. I've hosted kids from all those locations and/or dropped my kid at homes in these locations. The bus system works quite well. |
