I think that we (parents) and our gender non conforming kid (6 y/o) could benefit from seeing a therapist, but have no idea where to start. We'd really like to find someone who is good with this younger age group and also understanding of gender issues. We just could use some help and guidance with some of the behavioral issues, which may be completely normal or may have to do with gender identity.
Children’s Hospital could be a good resource
What area?
Children’s National. They’re doing zoom sessions right now
We are in DC, but location doesn’t really matter. Children’s requires you to fill out an extensive amount of paperwork (which we did months ago) but the wait time is so long to get even an initial appointment/consultation. We are still waiting and aren’t even sure Childrens will be the right fit for us, so were hoping for additional recommendations of a private therapist we could speak with sooner.
I wonder how OPs poor child is doing. I hope feeling ok and not having every behavior analyzed on the basis of gender conformity.
Op here. Kid totally doing ok (Covid has some benefits). We finally got into children’s after a year (and it’s been positive) but could still totally use a private therapist.

OP,
Not sure where you are located but check out: https://theheartwoodprogram.com/gender-wellness-clinic/ If they can't help you they will know who can. (But they can probably help you.) |
Define gender non-conforming in your child's case, if you don't mind. I'm curious what would qualify at that age. Asking sincerely.
