Minivan - Toyota or Kia

Anonymous
Our 2014 Honda Odyssey was a complete lemon - thousands of dollars into maintenance issues even with the powertrain warranty - super frustrating.

I am frustrated because we stretched to buy this thing thinking Honda was a super reliable car.

We will avoid Honda for the next minivan obviously, but please tell me if you love (and have had few issues with!) your Toyota or Kia. Also what year it is.

Thanks.

Toyota is probably the most reliable of the bunch, but it is also much pricier than a Kia.

We also had issues with our Odyssey after only 2 years so we ended up trading it in for a Toyota Sienna. Zero problems and super smooth ride.

Do you have a Toyota minivan you've had no maintenance issues on? I am leery now of "oh, that brand is so reliable" because that's what we heard about the $&% Honda! If Toyota truly is more reliable, I'll ante up, but if it's another urban myth, I'll go cheaper.

Maybe the issue is that Hondas USED to be super reliable, or their other models are super reliable.

Look at JD power ratings for dependability.

I’m on my second Toyota—first (2011) was totaled by hail damage at 140,000 miles, and we actually still have it because we bought it back from the insurance company for DS. That one had one big issue at around 100K miles and Toyota took care of it and gave us a loaner for almost a month while they waited for a part. My “new” one (2018) is 18 months old and already has 40k miles on it. We do a ton of winter driving so we have the AWD model. Absolutely no problems so far.

It’s really the perfect vehicle for our family of 5–we carpool, take long road trips, our dog is 60 lbs and my teenage DS is 6”1’ despite having average height parents. I am getting a little tired of the minivan in general, but this one should last until we don’t need one anymore.

I haven’t looked at the Kia since we bought the first one, and after 10 years I don’t remember much about it.

I will say that we’ve had lots of SUVs over the years and also driven rentals and family members’ SUVs and none are as practical as the Sienna. The only thing it’s not great for is deep deep snow.

Why not Pacifica? It’s better than Sedona for sure.

+1. The plug in model is great.

We had a horrible 2011 Odyssey. I dealt with it for 5 years and then bought a Sienna. No problems whatsoever with the sienna! Love it. The only money I’ve put into the sienna is maintenance.

We looked at the Kia as well. There were a few features on there that DH loved, but I thought the drivers seat and the ride were uncomfortable. I wanted to like it, but just couldn’t because I drive so much and that seat bothered me! We went with the Sienna and have never looked back.

Toyota for sure.

Kia s seats are not comfortable for long drive. I hadback pain after a test drive of 15 min .

I’ve had my Chrysler for 5 years and it’s at 65k miles and zero issues so far.

Another Sienna owner here. I had it for 8.5 years, 130,000 miles. No issues other than normal maintenance and tires. I got rid of it last summer and got a smaller SUV instead, as I don't need the third row anymore and was just ready for a change.
