Submitting a First Choice Letter - Worthwhile?

Anonymous
We have just submitted our applications for PK at the Big Three - which I now realize - having just discovered this forum a few days ago - was a huge waste of time because we have no connections, no significant money, and a child who scored high 90s but not 99.99 on WPSSI - so we apparently haven't a chance to get in. Nonetheless, we do have a strong preference between the three. Is worth writing a separate letter to the school declaring our preference?

Sure, can't hurt and maybe it will help.

I think it is more of a NYC thing, but I don't think can hurt. Write a sincere letter of why you like the school for your child. Good luck.

I'd write the letter! Please make sure you write "among the three." (My posts here often contain errors, spelling and grammatical.)

It's common in DC, too.

Yes, we got wait listed at what I thought was our back-up because we did not specify it was our first choice. Fortunately, we got into our first choice and we did tell that school it was our first choice.

If your child has a friend at that school -- there is nothing more charming than a heartfelt letter from a friend stating how much your child would like it there. It worked for us (GDS).

What's missing here is causality. Can posters really know for certain that they got in or were waitlisted because of a "first choice letter" or lack thereof?

Of course not, 14:00!

Well -- don't be too sure pps --- if the school told us the letter from the student made a difference -- then yes -- we know that it did! And, our child LOVES!!!! GDS

um, horseshit

In re causality, I can only speak in our case: we were told that a certain school only admits folks in whom they are interested IF the family indicates it is a first choice. School is not a Big 3, but is highly regarded.

We had none of those things, wrote a first choice letter, and got in.

I don't understand what you are saying here.

NP here. What exactly constitutes a first choice letter (aside from stating that said school is first choice...)? Can't one make that apparent in the parent statement (as we have) rather than send a separate letter? Seems redundant to me, and possibly annoying to ADs, or am I way off here? Many thanks for your insight!
