New Feedback on the JCC ?

Anonymous
Hi,
I've seen all the old information about this pre-school. I am strongly considering it and just wanted to know from current parents if the "kinks" have been worked out ? When I visited, it seemed like a well run program, but a lot of what I read from the old postings concern me. Can anyone provide any current feedback ?

Which JCC? I have heard the northern virginia JCC has a nice preschool. Are you referring to the DCJCC?

OP Here,
Sorry, I am referring to the DC JCC. Any updated feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks !

Not a parent there, but friends with three couples who have two- and three-year-olds there, and they all seem pretty happy with the DCJCC. Haven't really probed them on the issue, though.

OP Here again,
Just to clarify, I am referring to the DC JCC. Sorry I didn't put that in my original title....

OP again, I'm also specifically interested in the three year old room, although hopefully we would stay until our child was ready for kindergarten. We are non-jewish BTW, but really liked the other services we have used the center for, so it's a moot point for us.

We are non-Jewish with a 3 yr old at the DC JCC and have really enjoyed it. The teachers are young, but very conscientious and have strong educational backgrounds; the families with children there are diverse and caring (most have two working parents); the children seem happy, very articulate, and engaged; the facilities are great, especially the amount of indoor play space. The Jewishness of the school is a good balance--the children learn about Judaism, but not in a heavy handed or offensive way. If you live in the neighborhood, this is a great place because you run into your child's classmates all the time outside of school. It really is a strong neighborhood preschool.

This isn't to say that everything is great; sometimes the school seems a bit disorganized, for example. But we have learned that no school is going to be 100% perfect. However, we have been happy with the DC JCC and would recommend it to our friends.

We've also been happy with the JCC. Our daughter loves school and she has become much more independent since starting there. The facilities are also great - esp. on these cold winter days when they can't go outside - there are three indoor spaces they can play in. We are not Jewish and don't feel excluded at all. Although they do learn a lot about Jewish holidays etc, so if any kind of religous instruction bothers you then it's not the place for you. The other negative if you are not Jewish is they are closed on a lot of Jewish holidays - so you'll have to find back-up care on those days. In short, from what I can tell, those old posts are pretty outdated.

OP Here
We are not opposed to our child learning about all faiths. It's one of the reasons I looked into the school in the first place. It seems to have the perfect balance of diversity and it is convenient to where we live...

Hi everyone,

Thank you for asking the question about updates to the school and current-family feedback. I feel like we've come a long way since I took over the school (and I admit that there were a lot of issues in the transition). I've been the Early Childhood Director for two years this month, and I'm proud of the changes we've made.

It's best to see it for yourself, so if you'd like to take a tour, we offer them in the mornings, between 9:30 am-Noon. If you have any other questions, please feel free to call or email me.

Best,

Director Sarah - thank you for responding and for being "in the know" about DCUM!

Make sure you take a look at the schedule for days closed. There are a lot of religious holidays (not just the big ones) and depending how the calendar falls can leave you scrambling for back-up care.
