I had 6 week 3D level come back 48,000 and some. 6 week 5D come back 61,000 and some. Dr wants me to go back for another beta tomorrow. Should I still be expecting betas to double each time or is growth enough in 48 hours? Numbers seem high so will they double infinitely or at some point just grown up. I was super happy about 48,000 at 6 weeks (last time when I miscarried it was only like 180 at 6 weeks). But now am panicking again that not doubling means impending doom.
Gosh this journey sucks and previous losses make it even harder. I feel like so many people here have become experts on this stuff. Can anyone offer insight? |
| No, they slow way down. What is the point of even checking them now? Why not just do an ultrasound? |
+1. It’s unusual to continue to do betas after about 5 weeks or so. Certainly not when levels are that high. Do you have an u/s scheduled? Is this an RE or your ob? |
|
Betas at that stage are pointless. After 6 weeks, you should be able to see a heartbeat on ultrasound.
Why on earth is your doctor still running betas? |
| Can’t get in to see Dr until 3/17. They don’t do appointments until 8 weeks and they did not have an opening that I could work with my schedule until 9 weeks. So I won’t see a heartbeat until then. Regular OB not RE. At 5 weeks I sent a message, should I get betas this time (just recently had loss and last time they told me to go but this time they did not). By the time they got back to me it was 6 weeks. I did two and now they called to say do the third, so I started to panic |
| You are fine. Probably having twins. |
Umm no. No where near twin levels. |
| My fertility specialist told me that after 5 weeks, they should go up at least 60% every 48 hours and that they slow down at 8 weeks. |
| As others have said. Beta doubling time is only an indicator before 6 weeks. After that, an ultrasound should be used to determine viability. Once you're over 10,000, the doubling time slows dramatically. |
|
Get an ultrasound and a new doctor! Your beta should be followed if you have a history of an ectopic. Your beta is well over the discriminatory zone; you should be able to see an intrauterine gestational sac, yolk sac and a fetus at 6.4.

I ditched my OB that wouldn’t do an us at 6 weeks. Asked Capital Womens Care and they had no issues getting me in for one. I had reasons for wanting it early but RHJN wouldn’t even let me talk to a doc for a consult early. I’d ditch this OB, too. Sorry for ur loss. I hope This one goes well. PPs are right that doubling slows and an us would be much better Than another beta. |
| This may be moot at this point bc OP probably had the last blood draw but I find this blog that summarizes academic studies on specific topics related to pregnancy helpful. Here is the link to the ones about HCG levels: https://expectingscience.com/2018/05/17/an-early-beta-hcg-test-is-a-good-predictor-of-your-chances-of-a-first-trimester-miscarriage/ |
+1 I think we had two betas and then straight to ultrasound. |
|
OP here - betas went up again but not by much. Between Sat and Tuesday only up 20,000. Dr ordered an ultrasound. So now I am panicking and crying at work. The hospital system wants three days to schedule so they will not see me before Friday. Called the office back and left a sobbing message so hopefully they will see me. I don’t think I can wait until Friday pm to resolve knowing what is up.
Will take any positive vibes people have to spare. |
OP, I know it is really hard, but try not to focus on the betas. At this point, they aren't really giving you the info you need. I hope you can get your ultrasound moved up. I know how difficult of a wait this can be after a loss. |
