Middle schools

I have not found one middle school that I like. I have to list something for the lottery. I hate that there are no schools that I am happy to send my child. This is not question just a way to vent.

The difference between options for elementary and middle is really stark. What are you looking for in a middle school that you wish existed? Genuinely curious.

what is your housing budget? there might be places to own or rent that get you more of what you want...

Dc prep - they will prepare your child for the school of their choice for high school. Get kids into all of the elite application schools, top boarding schools, application schools

+1 to DC Prep and also look at Friendship and KIPP schools.

Do people know what schools like DC Prep and KIPP are actually like? I’ve heard so many horror stories from teacher friends that I’d never even consider those types of schools.

Your only real choices are:

Deal
Hardy
DCI
Latin (long shot)
Basis (long shot)
Stuart Hobson
DC Prep

Maybe
KIPPs
Paul PCS?
Center City
Friendship

That’s it! So sorry.....

This is a weird list. Many people (including my family) are happy at ITS and also Cap City. I’m sure others I’m not thinking of too

BASIS isn't a long shot for 5th grade - they took more than 3/4 of the students who applied by the middle of Sept last year. It's a lot harder to get into Hardy or SH OOB for 6th than BASIS for 6th, and DCI for 6th if your child isn't in an immersion charter.

BASIS, Latin, EL Haynes, Cap City, ITS, TRY, Sojourner Truth, Social Justice School, Deal, Hardy, Friendship Woodridge, Center City Shaw. Put in whatever order you want, but there's a possible list of 12.

Wells is having a great inaugural year and definitely worth a look

Sorry you aren't happy with your options. Please try not to pass that along to your kid, who has no preconceived notions of what middle school is like and might be happy at places you aren't sure of.

Or maybe your kid won't like middle school, but there are unhappy kids at every middle school in the world. It's a tough age--kids are mean, hormonal, immature, smelly...and still expected to learn and take more responsibility. It's three years and your kid will make it through with support from you and people and activities outside of school. High school is often better.

OP didn’t say if her kid is going into 5th or 6th. That matters.
