Hi there,
Our 3.5 year old just moved to a spanish/english bilingual preschool (and will continue on to a bilingual elementary school). We watch a 20-minute video every few days, and I would like to start having those videos be in Spanish. She doesn't want to watch her favorite shows (e.g. Daniel Tiger) in spanish, so I'm looking for something that is slower and aimed at teaching vocab--i.e. something that has songs like "head, shoulders, knees and toes," in Spanish so that she can start to learn body parts, practice the different sounds, etc. I see lots of stuff on youtube, but I would prefer something I can download or stream that's not on youtube. It doesn't have to be free--I'm fine with paying to download a few things. In summary, I'm looking for: --very basic spanish videos for a preschooler. Simple shows or shows with music would be great. --not on youtube |
I know you said not on YouTube, but... BabyFirst is a cable channel that my kids watch in Spanish at their (Spanish-speaking) grandparents' house. They have some things on Amazon, so you might be able to download from Prime. Their main programming is in English but they do have a separate Spanish language channel.
Here is their YT page, just to give you an idea of what they have. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCW0fLAGU31dyY7PDgjCs0pQ |
Check your Library. (I understand you prefer streaming, but they have loads of stuff available for free). Also amazon and Netflix have language options and children’s shows from other countries. |
The NickJr app (on TV or otherwise) has a show called "Canticos" that is really basic, slow, easy Spanish with animated little animals and characters -- usually some words reinforced by a song, like "Itsy Bitsy Spider" but in Spanish and then sung in English. |
My kid loves Canticos. They sometimes show Canticos on Nick Jr between shows. |
She isn't going to want to watch shows she is already familiar with in spanish. You need to find new shows that are made for preschoolers that are in spanish. When my ods was that age, he loved Harry y su cubeta de dinosaurios.
If you can get the cable channel Discovery Kids En Espanol (usually in a spanish language cable package) there are a ton of great shows. You can buy sesame street en espanol on amazon https://www.amazon.com/Aprende-Sesame-Season-1-Spanish/dp/B003D8PWTK These things are your best bet with a 3 yr old. It has to not be too babyish and it has to not be stuff where she already knows the voice of the character in english. |
also you can find videos with a spanish language track on amazon, hulu and netflix. All that netflix new animated content has the audio tracks in like 10 languages.
We have all those and then also disney plus. Her brain is going to pick up spanish much faster than an adults. I wouldn't look for toddler type shows for a 3 yr old. Focus on age appropriate shows for her because she is going to pick everything up really fast. |
(For example I am watching Moana right now on disney plus in spanish.) |
We got Disney Plus just for the Spanish option. If your 3.5 year old girl is like most 3.5 year old girls, the princess phase is coming for you, so hold on tight and at least watch that stuff en Espanol. And if not, there's plenty of other non-princess shows on Disney.
Also reconsider Youtube. We do a lot of fairy tales and classic children's story videos in Spanish from Youtube. |
Ohh, I just clicked on this link and some of the episodes were free. Thanks, PP, wouldn't have thought to check! |
Library has these as well. |
