Purchased home on lake, please help me decorate!

Anonymous
So we purchased a new home and it sits on a lake. Now I am shopping for decor. Would lake/water themed decor tacky? Should we decorate like it is a typical home?

I am open to ideas!

A lake house with lake decor? Don’t do that. Use YOUR style.

Ok. Thanks!!!

Another question. The home has industrial built in shelves and light fixtures.
Lamps like this....overdoing it?

Industrial shelves doesn’t mean you have to decorate to them. What is your style?

I detest seeing the bulb but I know I am in the minority based on what’s for sale.

OP, I like your enthusiasm, and if lake living is part of your identity then you can decorate that way!

Good question. i would say my style would be similar to this (within middle class budget): https://www.architecturaldigest.com/story/athena-calderone-amagansett-ny-renovation#intcid=recommendations_default-similar2_8d948d40-d8a1-49f1-9cfb-ac9bb321d703_cral-top2-2_text2VecSimilarity

I don’t think you have to plaster everything but make sure you use matte paint.

Flat! Sorry. Same idea.

Is this a weekend house or your primary home? If it's a weekend house you can be a little more relaxed, even kitschy. No signs that say "Lake House" though.

Seems like a more sophisticated Emily Henderson look - sort of boho-scandi-no kids allowed (I know these places are supposed to be kid friendly but so much white; so much white) - I'd check out her blog for ideas: https://stylebyemilyhenderson.com/

I like the lamps. However I have found that the retro lightbulbs don't provide that much light. They are more for looks than a light source. I had to take them out of a bathroom fixture, and am on the verge of taking them out of glass dining room pendants.

I'm going to have to disagree here. OP, are you into vintage or antiques or local area history of your lake house? I enjoy authenticity and use this in my decor. For instance, old wooden canoe paddles. How cool would these be hung up as wall decor or leaning on a front porch? Or, custom pillows with the lake name. Not kitschy. Can still be integrated into a modern decor but adds warmth. Or framed postcards of your lake area. Magnificent.

I have specific tastes, though. I just framed the plat and architectural rendering of my childhood home to put into a gallery display alongside a framed hardware and keys from my grandparents' home.
