We will appreciate all positive feedback. We will be relocating to the area and have 1 AAP MS and 1 non AAP MS. We toured couple of high schools and only Langley and McLean provided parent led tours during school hours. Both the schools were amazing and we will be very happy if our kids attend any of the 2. Our max on the SFH house is 1.1M, but there is nothing in this budget we like in these 2 HSs or may be market will get better soon. Our jobs will be in Tyson’s.
The other HS we wanted to tour but weren’t allowed were Oakton and Chantilly. Madison and Woodson were okay with us to do a self tour after the school ends. We just don’t get a similar feeling of these HSs compared to Langley and McLean. We are a hardworking family and it has taken us a while to get to save for the house. In case we can’t find a house we like in Langley and McLean which other HS from our list will you recommend? Please from our list only. |
You cant beat the commute. I would go with a house that you don’t like. It is just a house. You can paint and decorate and make it homey. |
I agree with this. McLean would be great for your commute and you like the school. It'll be tough but I bet you can find a house under $1.1... or stretch a little. |
I too agree. |
Here is one in McLean school district at $1.1M. It doesnt look bad to me.

Here is another one, well under your budget so you would have plenty of $$ to make it suit your tastes. Plus, it is closer to Tysons than the other one.

Keep watching, the homes $1.1 and under are not not he market for long- you have to pounce. |
Absolutely prioritize the commute. Who cares if the house is pretty if you never have family time? The only reason we live in Oakton is because our budget is half of yours. |
I would avoid McLean, Chantilly, and Oakton as they are all way overcrowded and have trailers everywhere. |
OP here, Which ones do you recommend ? The registrars at Chantilly and Oakton definitely gave the impression that they are super crowded and didn’t want any HS tours. Or, I should say they sounded super stressed. McLean not at all though it’s a big school, teachers, front staff and kids all seemed so nice. Same at Langley. |
All these schools are solid. Choose on the home and the commute. Crowdedness shifts over time with demographics and boundary changes. Registrars are just 1 person who have a certain tone at a certain moment in time. Will have little to do with how your children experience school. |
I’d go for Madison or Langley. McLean is set to be way over capacity in the upcoming years. 20 trailers. If you toured it, you must have seen the trailer park. Personally I agree with the response you got from Chantilly and Oakton, I don’t want my public school administrators giving tours while my kids are in school. I find it creepy and unnecessary. |
Oakton is undergoing major renovation and I think will look good after it is all wrapped up. |
Yes we noticed the trailers and certainly it was crowded. However, everyone looked fine. The tour was led by a PTA mom and there were 3 other families along with us. This is a big move for families relocating to the area especially when their kids are in MS/HS. Everyone wants to tour to see what they are getting into. Most families tour universities before they apply, one of the many reasons, how will your kid fit in. |
Probably TJ could be an option? |
