| Why is Costco beef so good? Do they get first pick from producers or something? I generally get grass fed/organic/etc beef from Whole Foods. The conventional meat from Giant and Trader Joe’s taste bad to me now. But the Costco beef is so good even though it’s not organic or grass fed. Anyone know why? |

I don’t know.
Are you a Costco plant? If so you have done your job well, I am definitely good to buy some Costco beef. |
No I’m not! I was totally a Mom’s and WF meat buyer until I got a Costco membership 2 years ago. I’m still iffy about the membership because every time I go I spend at least $200 so I don’t know if it’s really saving me any money. But the beef is so good! |

I hate to break it to you but Costco beef comes from massive feed lots. Even "grass fed" means that while the cow spent the majority of its time in a pasture, it was sent to a mass feedlot where it stood in its own shit for months while being fed corn that made it fat but also very sick and then it was slaughtered. The grain/corn diet fattens up the cow to keep costs down and provides more marbling which gives it is flavor.
I have seen these feed lots and they are incredibly disgusting. I don't even really care about animals and have no problem with hunters etc. I can't eat it anymore after seeing this. So gross. We only buy grass finished meat now from small farms. Way more expensive but at least dinner wasn't sitting in shit for months and sick. |
| I don't know but we recently bought steaks for my husband's birthday and they were excellent and inexpensive |
How did you gain access to these feed lots? |
| One of them is off I-5 in Northern CA which is one of the largest suppliers to grocery stores and restaurants in the country. It is visible in plain view from the highway. If you ever drive from LA to the Bay Area and take the I-5 rather than the longer coastal route you will not miss it. The stench is unbearable and you see thousands of cows packed into the area. The stench lasts for miles. I grew up with horses and mucking stalls so manure doesn't bother me but I almost threw up. |
OP here. This is what I’m talking about. Logically I know that Costco meat is the same industrial meat that grocery stores have. When I buy from places like Giant, the meat stinks and looks and tastes gross. But why does Costco beef look and smell and taste so good? Just as good as the more humanely raised beef. |
How do you eat out? |
| Costco quite often has prime rated beef. I almost never see that in a grocery store. |
Oh yeah, I’ve been past that feedlot. NP. |
| Agree. I threw away my last TJ meat because it smells AWFUL when I opened it. I cooked it and it still smells bad so I threw it away. Date was fine, it looked fine. But I have never had this problem with Costco. I buy the prime but it’s always so good. So if they all come from the same place, how is theirs better? NP, not costco plant. |
| Are you talking about the “organic” ground beef? Or the steaks? Or all of it in general. |
OP here. Yes this is what I mean. |
Just meat in general. Especially the beef - steaks and pot roast cuts and such. I’ve gotten good ground beef there but I’ve had ok ground beef at places like TJ’s too. |
