Freshman wants to transfer

Anonymous

For several reasons my dc who is a freshman at a large, midwestern university wants to transfer. Dc got a 4.0 first semester taking a challenging course load in a stem related field and is on track to do the same this semester. Are there college consultants who can help with this? I spoke to one who said this wasnt in her wheelhouse. My spouse and I have little experience and dc is hoping to get into a better school. Dc was waitlisted a several top schools as a high school senior.

Transfer application deadlines are almost here for Fall 2020. Many schools have March 1 or March 15 deadlines.

Transfering.

1. Many schools only allow Jr year.
2. Go to each school interested in and their website will tell your all transfer requirements. Complete the requirements for each application.
3. Transferring is common and mostly a paperwork issue, more than anything else. Especially with your DC GPA.
4. You do not need a college counselor for this.
5. When transferring does occur GPA will go away and at the new school GPA will begin again.
6. When looking at transfer programs please pay attention to what the new program requirements for graduation are. Because sometimes when transferring might add an extra year.

Also, check the Common Data Set reports for transfer applicant data. For example, Princeton and Dartmouth take like a dozen transfers a year while other schools, like USC take more than 1,000.

Our problem is that dc isn't sure what universities to apply to. That is where I was hoping a consultant could help particularly given the time crunch.

I agree it's mostly paperwork, but most schools will still ask for essays ---There is a wide variance of essays, beyond the "why do you want to transfer to ________"

For example, Stanford asks transfer applicants...

What piece of advice would you share with your younger self? Describe what experience or realization led you to this understanding. (50 – 150 words)

What is the most significant challenge that society faces today? (50 word limit)

What historical moment or event do you wish you could have witnessed? (50 word limit)

What five words best describe you?

When the choice is yours, what do you read, listen to, or watch? (50 word limit)

Name one thing you are looking forward to experiencing at Stanford. (50 word limit)

Imagine you had an extra hour in the day - how would you spend that time? (50 word limit).

Reflect on an idea or experience that makes you genuinely excited about learning. (100 to 250 words)

Op here. Thanks so much for the advice. Dc is having a hard time narrowing down where to go.

Ask DD what she is looking for in a new college (more urban, west coast, New England, etc). Make a list of target schools and then look at the CDS to see if they accept a lot of transfers.

This data is old and I wouldn't trust it but it gives you a general idea...

If she applies now, it may be too late for the fall but she can do it mid-sophomore year. I did that.

DC needs to ask themselves what they like about the school they are at now and what they don't.

They need to make the list if they want to transfer.

DD also needs to line up one-two teachers at her current college to write recommendation letters.

She also needs to request a "school report" to verify she attended college and did not get in trouble.

Most colleges will want to look at high school transcripts and test scores if someone is applying as a second-year transfer.

I think the effort to get this done should be entirely on her. Entirely, because it will help her put this into focus and decide how bad she wants it, how important it is, and what she hope her future plans will be. It's time for some real soul searching, and this in on her, imo. I wouldn't impede or promote, but I would have this be completely on her.

Is she transferring because she isn't satisfied with the ranking of her current school? That seems like it would narrow the list of options. What were her top choices a year ago and are any of those transfer options?

Can she talk to her high school counselor for advice?
