Considering buying this for my teen from a family member. 100K miles will maintained. Hoping to get a few more years out of it. Good idea?

While I don't think teens should get brand new cars, they have made so many safety improvements in recent years that I would probably want my teen driving something a little newer, though even an older Subaru Outback may be better than a lot of newer cars.

Our thought being a bigger older car might be safer than a newer small car (which is probably the alternative). Heavy being more important than a back up camera. No way to know for sure of course.

Also adding we live in a very snowy part of the country.

I see the argument for a newer car with more safety features, but I also think there’s something to be said about a first time driver having a car without automatic breaking, lane assist, backup cameras etc. Relying on those isn’t great.

No, its old and that's the age everything starts to fail. You will spend more on repairs then the car is worth.

I updated my 2006 Accord with a backup camera and stereo with CarPlay to discourage phone usage -- costed about $400 with install. The car has ABS brakes, front and side airbags, and electronic stability control. Does it have blind side monitors, cross-traffic alert, etc., that comes with more recent cars, no? But, I'm comfortable with the safety of the car, otherwise I wouldn't have been driving it, nor would I pass it onto my kid.
