treadmill or elliptical? recommend yours

Am debating between getting a treadmill or elliptical for our basement. Am not sure which to get. I normally run outside but with the cold weather and/or would like the opportunity to work out while DS is sleeping. I run probably 3x and maybe 4 a week but sometimes don't like to run because it requires washing hair. I used to alternate between the elliptical and treadmill (when I worked out every day before kids) so am considering getting an elliptical as a replacement for the gym. Any thoughts on those who have an elliptical or treadmill? Which do you prefer? Also, if you have an elliptical or treadmill, what is the brand and where did you purchase it. Thanks

I have both. My first choice is the elliptical at our gym, second choice is our treadmill and I haven't touched the elliptical after the first week I bought it. I think the problem is that I went too cheap and just don't like it at all. It's nothing like the one I use at the gym. As far as our treadmill, I bought one for a few hundred dollars from Sports Authority a few years back and have used it almost everyday since. It's nothing special, but I don't find I miss all the bells and whistles of gym quality ones. The only thing I would suggest is that if you are going to buy an elliptical, spend time really trying them out and don't cut costs.

I have a treadmill but have considered an elliptical. I primarily run but what I like most about the treadmill is being able to run or walk. I usually walk a 15% incline at 4.6 - 4.7 mph for an hour which is easily comparable to a run so I like both options. That said, I get sick of it and after a year without a gym membership, I am considering joining one - not only for the Cardin, but the weight equipment, classes, etc.

I have a Smooth TM which I have used 4+ years, no problem. If I had to replace it I would probably buy a True.

I have both and I alternate them. I don't know how much space you have or how much money you want to spend, but if you have room and enough money, I would get both; I find that I really like the variety of having both options. both of ours are Life Fitness models. Our elliptical we bought new for around $2000 a few years agom but both me and DH use it all the time, and it paid for itself easily because we use it instead of a gym membership. Our treadmill we got used many years ago and it is still working. HTH.

We have had a Landice treadmill since 2001 and have never had a problem with it. It gets a lot of use. We bought it from Fitness Resource. I think it was about $2K.

One thing to consider is the ceiling height in your basement. If you have low ceilings and anyone who will use it is tall, a treadmill could be a concussion waiting to happen.

Anyone know anything about the Mobia? Nautilus just started making it-- sort of a cross between walking, stepping, and elliptical. Supposed to be a very good low impact workout, but as far as I can tell only about 20 people have ever used one at this point.

for the poster who has a treadmill from sports authority, do you know the brand? also do you run on it? I agree with boredom issue but I don't think I can get both the treadmill and the elliptical...have to measure the height of the basement for sure.....
