What can you tell me about your child’s Elem experience at the Lourie Center School? How is the day structured? Class size? Academics? I’ve found a lot of threads about the therapeutic nursery school, but I’m specifically interested in hearing from parents with kids in the Elem school. Even better if your child did not transition in from the nursery school.

| I saw the title and came to rave about the nursery program, but sadly my child has to go through the MCPS ED program. Although my child did not attend, one of his classmates did and they thought it was a fantastic program. If you are being offered it and your child is lower elem, I would grab it. |

My child is in their second year at Lourie. Class sizes are pretty small - think last year was six, this year is seven and kid has told me there are only seats for nine total in their room. Academics are good, and they have been able to accelerate in the areas our kid has needed it.
My complaints are twofold: one, I think there are some administrative issues going on right now that parents haven't been kept in the loop on. Two high level staff, including the school's director, left in December and the letter that came home kind of implied they'd been fired. Two, I think they are heavy-handed on seclusion and restraint (and I say that as someone who is trained to use both techniques in MCPS). I would also caution anyone looking to place a child who doesn't have an ED to think carefully - our kid has picked up a lot of language and some behavior from peers that we really would have loved to avoid. |
They don’t have to go. You can choose something different and pay. They take some insurances. |
They have always had internal issues and some of the therapists are a bit odd. But it’s good for kids who need it. |
| Any recent experiences or intel on this school? |
