I freely admit that this is February, waiting for decisions craziness, but I am waking up from feeling stressed for my DD about getting into Maret for 7th. She is a strong student, great scores, good kid, yada yada. We have a good public school fall back being in MoCo. But she and we were so taken with the community that the school seems to be (academics too but that seemed good at most places we looked at).
No one else in our friend circle is applying for private, so I feel a little alone in my angst about this. Anyone else feeling a spot of this compulsive stress too? I know, three more weeks. Can't wait. |

I have a 6th grader starting Maret so hopefully we’ll meet soon-good luck! I’ll be the one pretending that I’ve never even heard of DCUM...
Good luck! |
How do you know already? Is it a bad sign we don’t? |
| Ugh. Sorry! Autocorrect- kid is a current student! Don’t know what i typed that ended up like that. We’ve been there for years... |
| We are hoping for Maret too. But for 9th. Coming from moco public too. |
| I know that last year Maret had 120 applications for ten 6th grade spots (roughly 5 girls, 5 boys). A friend of mine from our (public) school asked the admissions director. Her kid did not get in. OP, the odds are incredibly long for middle school at these schools, especially coming from public school. I know how excited you are but temper your excitement with reality. I never knew just hard difficult it is to get in to these schools. |
It's true that the odds are not great, but you never know. Good luck OP. My child is in the current 6th grade and it's a really good group of kids. |
| We came in 9th grade so it is possible. We have been very happy so far. Good luck to all! |
| Crossing my fingers for yiou guys! |
The director of admissions for the middle school is lovely. He told us that odds for 7th were much better than 6th. I'm guessing you told him this was your first choice. Not saying that will confirm an acceptance, but it can't hurt. |
| OP - we’ve been where you are, albeit at a different grade - our DC was a stellar candidate: grades, scores, athletics, music, interests, personality, even hook - and Maret was their first choice. Biggest mistake we made was not counseling against unreal expectations. The Sidwell, GDS, Potomac larger programs are simply much easier to get into than Maret - and it’s purely based on both class size and connection. Maret is more competitive because it’s smaller and they have a strong sibling preference, further reducing opportunities for new families. I wish you the best of luck, but be sure to keep expectations in check because without a connection it is next to impossible to gain admission to Maret at any grade. |
I wouldn’t get too obsessed—Maret is no more unique than other places in the end. Your daughter will be fine there or elsewhere. |
That is not accurate. Maret is a much more homogenous community than any of the other competitive elites. It is a conscientious choice of the school administration as it reflects the families that have traditionally supported the school. There are elites based on excellence and elites based on demand. At Maret, it is all about demand. |
| Maret is also in the midst of transition and with the impending departure of the Head of the Middle School, and turnover in faculty in recent years, be careful what you hope for, you just may get it... |
Do you mean "conscious"? |
