Got this email:
Subject: Bargaining Update #12: No Love This Valentine's Day Roses are red, Violets are blue. Dignity is sweet. Respect is too. Last night MCPS demonstrated: That neither educators nor students deserve dignity or respect. That there is no intention on their part of alleviating the immense pressures that educators are facing on the front lines of our underfunded school system. We are appalled by what seems to be a failure on the part of MCPS to bargain in good faith. We will be reaching out with a comprehensive bargaining update to include details from Thursday night’s session. Stay tuned for next steps. |
| What’s MCEA? |
| I don’t get it. Is this spam? |
| That's the name of the teachers' union. |
| I’m a parent and I’m furious with MCPS. |
| OP, I don't know about MCEA and MCPS specifically, but generally, unions and management have, at best, a mutually respectful relationship. |
Historically they have been mutually respectful. Ive never seen an email like this from the union in my time working for MCPS. It’s not spam, but I was pretty surprised by the tone. Good for them. Teachers want to feel supported. |
| MCEA has now officially pissed off MCPS with making MCPS "look bad". Well teachers have been complaining for years and the union is over the lack of response from MCPS. |
| What is MCEA? |
|
MCPS 'underfunded'. LOL.
They get way too much tax money already as is. |
They don’t need mcea to make them look bad, they’re doing that all on their own. The worst MCPS PR is coming from its own staff and probably former employees too. I don’t know anyone who is happy right now, and I’m including admin colleagues. |

I wonder if this has anything to do with the parent survey we got tonight. To me it seemed pretty clear they are planning to start removing, or at least threatening to remove, funding and support for the high need schools or at least letting the public think that they're going to do that so they start supporting the boundary study. I filled out the survey but found the options to be very leading. I wrote that none of the options they listed matter if safety and discipline don't get under control, and their current system is clearly not working and they need to do better and not sweep it under the rug.
Trust me, as a mid-career teacher who has experienced enough of these types of leading surveys, the way they wrote the survey means that no matter which way you vote it will be considered a reason why the boundary study and redistricting will absolutely happen. And when they no longer have as many high needs schools on paper, they will be able to treat teachers and staff even more like dirt than they already do. I'm curious to know what exactly is going on with bargaining. I've signed up for their emails numerous times and I still don't receive them. It's a baffling system. |
| This round of bargaining has been particularly bad. MCPS has not been willing to negotiate anything. Basically saying no to everything with no compromise. It's being done in bad faith. Team teacher (and I am a parent, don't work in the schools, but as a volnteer I have seen the stuff the teachers have to deal with). |
What kinds of things are they outright saying no to with no discussion? |
