If you have a $50k car, how much do you pay in car tax in Fairfax County?
I drive a beater right now and pay $75/year. I've saved all my nickels and pennies and am debating whether I should blow some of it on a nice car. But I want to know how much I would be on the hook for in property tax for the car. Thank you! |
Much more then in MD

| Several thousand a year for a 50k car. |
Roughly my experience in Alexandria. |
| I have a $90k car, and it was around $3700, so I’d guess around $2k a year. |
But you have to live in Maryland. |
| I’ve wondered this too and it stops me from buying a nice car. I hate the car tax so much. I like to buy a 40k car and drive it for 10 years. |
Different pp. Having lived in both, Maryland is much nicer. |
This is OP. Thank you. |

so you pay a sales tax... when you buy the car
https://www.dmv.virginia.gov/vehicles/#sut.asp and you have to pay a property tax each year https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/taxes/vehicles/understanding-vehicle-taxes FFX county uses NADA as their estimate |
| I paid a little under 2k on my truck when it was new. |
This is not helpful unless you share the value of the truck. |
OP here. Thank you for posting this. It appears that the tax rate for most vehicles is $4.57 per $100 of assessed value. So for a $50k vehicle, the tax would be around $2285. |
*than. Virginia schools teach grammar. |
Look up car tax relief. Part of that should be subtracted under car tax relief if its primarily for personal use. |
