Is an iPhone 8 going to last several more years?

Thinking about getting my our daughter an iPhone. Currently DH has an 8 and I have the 8 plus, purchased when they were the most current models. We tend to use our phones until they become basically obsolete so we don’t trade in regularly. We were thinking about giving one of our phones to DD, but is that silly considering the 8 is fairly old by now? My battery life definitely isn’t so hot and while DH’s is better, it’s declining as well.

Would buying her a new 8 (in other words, a phone, while an older model, that has a fresh battery as opposed to one that’s been in constant use for several years now) be sufficient to last a few more years or are we better off buying her something that is newer and will last longer? Again, we don’t trade in regularly so it’s not like I’ll have a newer model phone to give her soon.

Just give her yours and buy her an external battery pack. You can always get her a new one later or for Christmas or something.

I wish I knew you so I could give you several out of my dozens of battery packs. DH is in IT and gets SO MANY for free.

Give her the better of yours. It will be fine for her. Too likely that she’ll break it or lose it by accident so it’s not worth giving her a new model. My 8 has become majorly glitchy over the last 6 weeks but I’m going to hang on till next Fall.

You can replace the internal battery. Hard to say how long the 8 will last. I switched from a 5 to a 10R this past summer. My DH gave up his 4?the year before.

My mom still has an iPhone 4 that’s works fine for her purposes (she doesn’t use it that much). I have a 7 that I plan to keep til it no longer works. I think you should give your daughter your old phone and get yourself something new.

This! At least in terms of breaking it. DS14 smashed his 6 the other day because it fell out of his pocket while playing basketball, surprise, surprise! That's my old phone and we both thought it was worth $60 for a new screen.

And I'm going to be bummed if my 8 gets glitchy soon. I need another two years out of that puppy!

I went from 6 to 10. My 6 was fine until its last days.

I'm still using my 6 with no problems and we just bought a 7 brand new for our youngest. A new 8 is still a new phone.

I just replaced my 5 with an 8. You’ll be fine.

My wife is still using her 6plus. I have a Samsung Galaxy 7 that I bought just after she bought hers (I tried a cheaper Smart phone for 6 months before I gave in and got the G7) and neither one of us has plans to replace in the near future unless something goes wrong with the phones.

Still using my 6. Replaced the battery last year and hope to continue to use it for some time. Give her the 8 and replace the battery.

The four phones in my family are a 6, 6s, 6 plus and 7 plus. All of them work just fine (the 6 and 6 plus have had battery replacements) and we plan to keep them until they basically don’t work anymore. I think giving your child an 8 is more than fine.

Last year on Mother’s Day and for Father’s Day/graduation Verizon had buy 1 get 1 free for XR. We added a line for our daughter, took the new phones for ourselves and gave our daughter an 8.
