Metropolitan DC Local Politics
|
Full disclosure: I am a progressive Democrat. My first choice is Elizabeth Warren, though I’m not too keen on her chances so as of now I would probably vote for Klobuchar.
I am really terrified of Sanders as the nominee. I don’t even personally take issue with his positions. I don’t think any of it would happen even if he was elected but it’s not my vote he’d need, it’s my neighbors’. Suburban Montgomery and Fairfax counties are not Bernie country. Most people here are comfortable with their economic situation and disgusted with Trump, but would fear what would happen to the stock market and their 401(k)s if a socialist, even a nominal socialist is elected. Perception matters in the economy and Bernie would wreck it, or at least that’s what people will have in mind. A good comparison is Marc Elrich. He is a Berniecrat who can’t get anything done but he scares away business by his mere presence. I’m afraid that Bernie would cause an unspeakable red wave down to our state and local politics. Yes, people hate Trump and the Republican brand, but at the end of the day people will hold their nose and vote for the grotesque thing that hasn’t changed their lives at all - only given them some marches to go to on weekends and catchy Resist slogans to virtue signal with - because the thing more horrifying than that is giving up some of their personal wealth. |
