cross walk opinions

Someone tried to school me today (angrily) about waiting for the crosswalk person to cross a street to school. Crowdsourcing...required to wait for the crosswalk person, or if the street is clear I can cross. Who's right?

Your post is confusing. Was someone in the crosswalk or not? I’m not sure what you mean by “if the street is clear.” How can it be clear if someone is in the crosswalk? Do you mean that the pedestrian is past your car, but still in the crosswalk on the rest of the street? Personal, I wait. Screw the asshole behind me.

You mean if they’re approaching the other side? I go if they’re within 1-2 steps of the other/far side. I do not go as soon as they move past my vehicle, or halfway.

Before we revoke licenses for bad drivers, we should revoke posting privileges for people who can't write coherently.

Are you asking about a crossing where there is a school crossing guard? And your question is whether you must wait for the crossing guard to cross you, or whether you are allowed to cross on your own?

You mean you waited for them to fully cross before you started to drive through the crosswalk? If so, annoying but the law. It's what the crossing guards do.

The rule I learned was that you have to wait if the pedestrian is approaching your lane or in your lane. Once they've cleared your lane, you can proceed if it's otherwise safe.

I think OP meant the green person by meaning "crosswalk person" So OP is asking if it's OK to jaywalk.

I think OP is talking about the crossing guard.

Yeah, this is confusing.

1. Are you talking about waiting for the pedestrian signal at a stoplight? You are not allowed to cross the street against the light, that is jaywalking. You need to wait for the signal.

2. Are you talking about waiting for a crossing guard? No, you do not need to wait for the crossing guard if you are legally allowed to cross.

3. Are you talking about at a stop sign? The pedestrian pretty much always has right of way at a 4 way stop. You are supposed to stop and then wait your turn to go, but the speed differential between cars and pedestrians means the pedestrian can usually just glance and go.

4. Are you talking about a marked crosswalk with no light or stop sign? The pedestrian has the right of way (assuming you don't jump in front of a car with no warning), but that doesn't really matter if someone runs you over. You should wait for a break in the traffic or for someone to stop.

about waiting for the crosswalk person to cross a street to school. - sounds like OP is driving and someone is in the crosswalk going to school.

required to wait for the crosswalk person
- I think they're asking if they have the right of way or if the person in the crosswalk does. Obviously the person in the crosswalk has the right of way and the car must stop.

or if the street is clear I can cross. Who's right? - the street being clear of cars does not mean you do not have to stop for a person in a crosswalk.

What is a "crosswalk person"? A pedestrian, or a crossing guard?

I’m pretty sure she almost hit a pedestrian, they yelled at her, and she wants to know if she should be stopping.

If a human being is in the street, whether in the crosswalk or not, please stop your car so that human being can safely cross or get out of the street. Please do not yell or honk at anyone even if under the letter of the law that person is doing something illegal, unless yelling or thinking is the only way to save that person from being injured or killed.

Or to put more simply, please don't kill people because you think you are morally or legally right.
