MD IPA (fed plan) - HCG trigger not covered under plan

Anonymous
Has this happened to anyone -- Novarel (HCG trigger shot) not covered under the plan? The generic isn't covered either. I've left a message with Shady grove for an alternative.

Sorry I don't have answer -but I just signed up wtih MDIPA during open enrollment (knowing IVF is happening in 2010). Would you mind sharing how much it costs without insurance?

CVS quoted $130/vial... 3 vials needed for IUI cycle.

Wow -I remembered paying around $40 for my trigger when I did IUI with CFA in 2008 (my insurance wouldn't cover it). Yikes -I really hope you can find an alternative.

Have you tried some of the fertility pharmacies? Sometimes they offer better prices on fertility meds.

Thanks for the suggestion - do you have any recommendations?

I used Professional Pharmacy in Maryland. At the time (2008), they had the best prices on the drugs I needed. I was also pleased with the customer service.

Freedom Fertility Pharmacy. They have been fantastic. 800-660-4283. I think they are one of the biggest.

I **think** that MDIPA only covers injectable drugs for IVF cycles and not for IUI - they covered my hcG trigger for my IVF cycles but i think I remember reading in their materials that they only cover injectable meds for IVF, which seems pretty crazy...

It does seem crazy since the IUI cycle, including meds, was approved.... I'm just glad I didn't wait until the last minute to fill the prescription!

13:16 poster here: I just looked up the MDIPA benefits brochure and it does say that they cover Clomid for IUI cycles and injectable meds for covered IVF cycles - it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me, though.

I think Freedom pharmacy is a lot cheaper than CVS. I use Medco - you could try them also.

My insurance requires me to do mail order through Medco, and on my insurance co. website there is a database of all the drugs with comparison pricing for mail order pharmacies v. retail, and retail is MUCH more expensive. I'm sure you can get it for less through a mail order pharmacy. Medco has rush delivery and everything is packed in a styrofoam cooler with ice packs if it is a medication that needs refrigeration.

I used Ovidrel 250mcg trigger shot for my IUI cycle; maybe that's another option.

OP here. Thanks for the responses. I'm going with Professional Pharmacy -- paying 1/2 of what CVS quoted and they're familiar with Shady Grove.

Where is Professional Pharmacy located? And does anyone know how much Follistim and Ovidrel cost with them? I am with Optimum Choice and just found out they don't cover injectibles with an IUI.
