Turning to the collective wisdom of DCUM for ideas on what to get a new SO for Valentine's Day.
Men: if you're reading, what is a Valentine gift you really enjoyed? If you were the giver: what are some presents that were especially well received? I'm sure someone might reply to the effect of "if you need to crowdsource this, you don't deserve to be in a relationship." Fair enough: I know there are articles and lists online, but thought it might be a fun thread for a snowy Saturday and your answers would be closer to the mark than a generic list. Background: We've been together since the beginning of December. I'm widowed (8 yrs, finally ready and w/ enough kid-free time), he's late 40s divorced w/ teens. About him: great cook, likes to snowshoe and hike, enjoys good beer and live music, reads a lot, has a sexy beard, and just moved into a new house. I'm more of an experience gift person, but think it would be nice to give something tangible too. Plus I'm not sure at this early stage what is an appropriate gift. Thank you for your ideas!! |
Have you guys discussed exclusivity? Has he asked you out for and made plans for V day? How often do you see each other? Talk on the phone? |
Where are you located that it's snowing? |
Gift? Not necessary.
Also, where is it a “snowy Saturday?” We got nothing here in the DMV. |
Something he can use at his new house is a great idea. What about some great food that you can cook together on Valentine’s with some craft beer and a nice bottle of wine? A throw blanket and candle for his family room, that you can use when watching a movie that night? Gift certificate for dinner at a nice restaurant? Subscription to a beer delivery service for three months? |
When I was in a newish relationship with now DH for v day (like 3 weeks in) I made him brownies. That way I had something but it didn’t need to be valentines if he didn’t go there. |
Hahhah.. guy here. None of my guy friends has ever said "My DW just got me this awesome gift..a throw pillow and a candle!"
Here's what to get: - Good alcohol - Beer delivery service is interesting if you think he'd like it. - You. Just show up in sexy new lingerie with a coat over it, and tel him the lingerie is his present, but you'll be wearing it. Candles... I'm still laughing at that one. |
BJ and a nice homemade dinner. Been doing it for 10 years and he’s never asked for anything else.. |
Tickets to a comedy show or sports event. |
Invite him over for a nice dinner and then tell him you have something special for him in your bedroom. Then take a dominate role and just ask him to lie back and enjoy himself. He will then get very physical and you will truly enjoy yourself. We’ve been married a long time and this never fails to be a winner. |
A homemade meal with a homemade dessert- something nicer and more elaborate than a weeknight dinner. Wear a cute dress, have some good wine, and stay in. |
Yeah I’m a DW and could have told you the same thing. If I showed up at my now-DHs house 2 months in with a candle and a throw he would have been rightly confused. If I did it now he’d know that it was really a gift for myself. |
I was in your shoes last year. I got him a nice bottle of wine. One of his favorites that was a bit of a splurge but still kind of low key. It thrilled him. We also went to a concert and I wore a short skirt. That grilled him more. |
+10,000 This is a good move - and not just once a year. |
