Woodlin Elementary in Silver Spring

Anonymous
Our child is in a language immersion program and we are considering a move to Woodlin (our home school) in the next year or two, because we know from experience with our first child that the language immersion school in question is not so strong in grades 4 and 5. We are also not all that happy with the teacher prospects in this program for those grades.

There are obvious downsides to this - social adjustment, school adjustment, language issues (the child's written English is weak because everything has been in the second language). On the other hand, if Woodlin has a strong program for grades 4 and 5, we will consider doing this.

Are there any Woodlin parents who can comment on their experience with those grades at the school?

Thanks in advance.

You might have better luck getting an answer by posting on the Silver Spring Moms listserv. There are quite a few Woodlin parents on that list.

Thanks. I don't want to post there because of the nature of this query; I don't want to announce to the community that we are thinking of leaving the language immersion program.

Thanks though.

We're in immersion, so I'm wondering what is lacking with the immersion program in grades 4 and 5? Thanks!

The social studies program is very weak and in our experience the teachers just blew off big portions of the curriculum altogether, e.g. our child didn't learn anything about the American Revolution (which is part of standard 5th-grade curriculum in MC). We also thought the reading program was very mediocre, and the writing instruction rote and uninspiring.
