Phew, Whew or Shew

Which do you use and what part of the country are you from?

I'm from the midatlantic and I use Phew and whew but differently.

Whew is for accomplishing something, getting it done, or dodging a bullet - Whew, that's a relief, Whew, that was hard work.

Phew is more for starting something tough - Phew this is going to be hard work. Keep going.

I don’t think it’s ridiculous. I’m midatlantic too, and to me phew = “that was a close call” and whew = “that was hard work.”

I use Phew for both of those, although sometimes I use Whoo for your first example. My parents are from Chicago.

I use "Phew!" for close calls, or any occasion that ends up being a huge relief. Grew up in the South and midwest. I never use "Whew", though I've heard of it. I've never heard of anyone using "Shew" ("Shrew" is a different matter.).

From Virginia, whew is for hard work or ending something hard. Phew is for a near Miss or near accident.
