CoGat for second grade

Anonymous
I just received a letter that second graders will be taking the Cogat. I was under the impression that they take the inView test in second and Cogat in third. I’m curious to know if this is new, and if so, what would they take in third grade then?

I don't see InView listed here, so looks like CogAT will be given in 2nd instead, as well as in 3rd and 5th.

Got the same letter. I think it is a change. Apparently they’re now going to give the CoGAT screener in 2nd and 3rd.

That’s weird, we had a second grader and didn’t get the letter. Does it say when kids will be tested? Is this another computer test?

The link posted above answers your question. Testing between 3/16-3/30

Is the test over a computer? My kid gets anxious enough with the tests already administered (six MAP tests over the year).

Second graders only take three MAP tests. Just math.

If your snowflake gets so anxious over tests, you should send him to private.
Geez.

I think you can opt out of all these tests.

Thanks so much for poking fun at my child’s anxiety disorder. You are just a peach.

Nope, six for K-. The MAP-P three times a year and the MAP-RF three times a year. Only the math tests appear on the parent portal, so we have to email the teacher to get the other ones.

You can’t opt out of MAP testing. That’s the data the county uses to track achievement county wide. I’m not sure if you could opt out of the Cogat.

Oops that should be six for K-2.

You can opt out of CogAT at any level, just like you could opt out of InView when they used that for GT identification. Just send your child's teacher a note.

If you look at this document it explains the process they use to identify kids as GT

https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/uploadedFiles/curriculum/enriched/about/Understanding%20GT%20Screening%202019%20ENG.pdf

you can see that kids don't even need the CogAT to be labeled GT if they have high MAP scores and parent survey. Just be sure you do the survey otherwise they might not consider your kid.

Thanks! Is this the letter that some parents got yesterday? We still have not received one.
