Not really. Politicians love "Fortunate Son," but I don't think they have ever listened to the lyrics. |
I watched all 10 minutes. No need to retract my comments. You may have accidentally linked to the wrong video, but he absolutely does not come across as "quite intelligent." |
Why not ask the Republicans who have identified with the song whether they should retract their comments given his explicit statement that he doesn't like conservatives identifying with the song? I listened to the entire interview. I'll agree that he comes off as thoughtful but, if anything, he reinforces the view that he is not all that articulate. Just like many of his supporters here, he claims he didn't mean what his lyrics clearly say. Take the lines:
Three mentions of "you're" or "your" which clearly suggests these lines are addressing short, fat people who use food stamps to buy junk food. In the interview, he says, again as his supporters here have argued, that he is criticizing the system that encourages this outcome. Perhaps he couldn't figure to a way to rhyme "The system shouldn't encourage, people to buy junk food, being healthy is important, as is a low BMI" but he has expressed himself poorly. He needs to accept responsibility for that rather than blaming people who assumed that he meant what he wrote. |
| I honestly can hardly believe how much attention DCUM posters are giving this song and musician. Why? |
It's not just DCUM, this is being discussed all over the Internet. Nothing special about DCUM. |
I just can't believe people here care what he sings. |
You think we are different than everyone else? People are talking about the singer and the song all over the world. I know a lot of folks think we live in a bubble, but DCUM is not hermetically sealed off from the rest of the world. |
They are going to tell him he doesn’t know what his own song is about. |

Smart performer
A Farmville resident, Anthony — whose real name is Christopher Anthony Lunsford — amassed a major following essentially overnight after releasing his hit song “Rich Men North of Richmond” on RadioWV YouTube’s page earlier this month. “It’s a nice feeling that everyone is so united over something,” Anthony told The News & Advance while warming up and tuning his guitar minutes before taking the stage. “I wrote all these for me,” he added. “I didn’t think it would be for others.” Anthony said he landed on the stage name as a dedication to his grandfather, whose real name was Oliver Anthony, as well as the 1930s Appalachia where his grandfather was born and raised, he wrote on self-revelation on Facebook last week. https://newsadvance.com/news/local/farmville-overnight-sensation-oliver-anthony-puts-on-a-show-for-home-crowd/article_6154c27a-411d-11ee-8f1e-b753ff171ff6.html |

Conservatives are not the current Republican Party. |
Conservatives don’t identify with the Republican Party. We are the people of which he speaks when he says we will save each other. |

I'm not thinking folks here are living in a bubble. I guess -- to be honest -- I just don't care about his singing or "message." To me, he's just another guy writing and singing songs. |
Very true. The current Republican Party are regressives and fascists. |
Republicans to other Republicans: You're doing it wrong!
